Overweight and TTC

Hi! Apologises if there's a similar thread going on. I am ttc first baby and i am overweight, something I've struggled with all my teenage years and its continuing into my twenties.

I am 6ft tall and 17 stone so im a big girl but i hear i carry it well because of my shape and build, i know this will effect my chances and i am doing a lot more exercise and eating more healthier, and the weight is coming off slowly. I was wondering if anyone else is worried about this or is there anyone that was overweight when they conceived, and maybe we can help motivate each other?

Hi emilyjane, I too have struggled with my weight for most of my adulthood. I was a size 16 when I had my DS and I conceived after just 3 months. I'm now a 16-18 and about 3.5 - 4 stone overweight. I'm pregnant again though after 8-9 mths of trying so the weight hasn't, to this point, caused me any major difficulties. I'd really like to sort it out once and for all, but it'll have to wait for a bit now obviously.

Emilyjane11 · 06/09/2014 19:31

I too am a 16-18. I really don't want to put myself or my future child in any kind of danger and since deciding we would start trying, which was only a few days ago, i have been kicked up the arse and have been making changes which i suppose is all I can do at this point. I'm glad to hear that you didn't struggle. How far gone are you? Congratulations xx

Losing the weight is a good thing. I wish I'd done it first as I certainly won't be doing it now for a bit. That said, I put on very little weight during the pregnancy, just two stone and almost 10 lbs of that was baby (my husband and i are both tall and the baby was long rather than chubby) and the rest fluid etc. I was very quickly the same weight as I was pre-baby, at least I hadn't made it worse! No gestational diabetes, no issues at all with the pregnancy actually, normal delivery etc. Just to reassure you in case it does happen quickly.

I hope for the same outcome this time but I'm only 6 weeks so very early days at this point. I just plan not to pile on weight and try and be as active and healthy as I can.

Emilyjane11 · 06/09/2014 20:02

That's good to hear thank you. You have put my mind at ease.
I struggle very much with depression and food is definitely my coping mechanism but I'm getting out of a very bad phase of it which is making it easier to get my bum in gear!

I hope your pregnancy goes well and you enjoy it :) xx

Hi EmilyJane

I am very overweight. The dh and I have decided to ttc #3. I have however recently found out I have a medical condition that is made worse by weight gain but can be controlled if I lose weight. As a result I have personally decided to put ttc on hold until the end of the year. I have also joined slimming world and started going swimming and walking more.

When I have my dd 6 years ago I was around 15 stone. I didnt have any problems in my pregnancy however I did put on around 2.5 stones with pregnancy weight.

When I had my ds 3 years ago I had managed to get down to 14 stone and felt alot better. I did have a few problems with that pregnancy but I dont think they were weight related.

The main thing I did notice about being overweight when pregnant were that I had to have a gtt test both times and I had to see a pain consultant at 36 weeks.

Both my babies were little, one 6lb 4 and one 5lb 10 but again I dont know if this is anything to do with my pregnancy weight.

I just though I would share my story but I can honestly say if I hadnt found out about my medical condition then I would probably still be ttc whilst trying to lose weight xxx

Emilyjane11 · 06/09/2014 20:25

Thanks for sharing. I am definitely going to be loosing some weight before falling pregnant, i am on my first cycle since coming off BC and i think its going to take a while anyway. Why did you have to see a pain consultant?

OP posts:
tiffs · 06/09/2014 20:45

It was to discuss pain relief options as they said sometimes it can be difficult to get an epidural site when overweight so they advised me to have one straight away. But I didn't chose to have one xx

Emilyjane11 · 06/09/2014 21:18

Oh right i see. I'm defiantly worried about labour! X

I am a size 22 and TTC, I wish I was thinner and I am losing weight but I figured I may as well start now because I am 30 and I am aware of time ticking away. I have lost 2.5 stone so far so I am hoping my weight doesn't hinder me too much.

Lots of luck to you xx

Emilyjane11 · 06/09/2014 21:32

Well done that's an amazing achievement. Yeah that's my thinking to, i might as well start trying and get healthy at the same time! Thanks for the reply you've all made me feel a lot better xx

Hi ladies, I'm 5'2" and size 16-18, weighing 13st 2lbs. I've been TTC for 12 months now, didn't think my weight had anything to do with it but actually I now think it's the major thing for me...I wasn't having any cycles at all and went to the GP who suspected PCOS. I read up a little about it and read that blood insulin is directly connected with hormones (which of course regulate cycles). I decided to embark on a low GI diet which specifically targets bringing down the insulin levels. 2 weeks later I had my first af in 7 months. I've only lost 7lbs so far but I have since had another af in August which is astounding really! I also ovulated for the first time in July, and again I credit the low GI diet for helping out the insulin and hormone levels to allow that to happen.

I've been for my first fertility appointment at the hospital recently and was told I had to lose 2st and get my BMI to below 30 to qualify for any help on the NHS. Was a brutal appointment but I knew it needed to be done. However, although I will continue to lose weight on the low GI I intend to seek treatment privately to get it all moving a bit more quickly (I'm 33)!

I think if you're overweight it can't be a bad thing as you're TTC to exercise a bit more, take the vitamins and eat a bit better and drink a bit less! (oh that sounds very preachy sorry about that!)

Emilyjane11 · 07/09/2014 18:12

Thanks for sharing, i am going to look into that diet. you've done really well so far by the sounds of it, the fact you have had two periods is amazing! Just shows you doesn't it. I am going to try my best to get this weight lost before i get pregnant!

I am, and always have been very overweight - I was probably a 22 when my dses were born. I had no trouble conceiving, no trouble with my blood pressure during any of the 3 pregnancies, and whilst my labours were long, I gave birth naturally each time, with an episiotomy the first time, and no intervention at all in the home births of ds2 and ds3.

Emilyjane11 · 08/09/2014 20:54

Wow that's amazing to know thank you :) home births too! How was that?

Hi Emilyjane, I am in a similar situation in fact I just posted about being a bit worried about this on another thread! I am a size 22, weigh about 19 stone, otherwise completely healthy though, regular cycles etc. Been ttc #1 for about 3 months.

I have been trying to lose some weight ever since we decided to go for it on ttc, don't want to put off ttc as I am in my early 30s and don't feel time is on my side. I've lost half a stone since then, it is coming off very slowly but I prefer that as I'm less likely to ruin it with a big binge! Been trying to exercise at least 30 mins 3 times a week as well.

For some reason i am not really worried about pregnancy or labour yet, just concentrating on worrying about getting preg! I'm sure those worries will come though.

Fx for you and all the other ladies on this thread!

creamhearts · 08/09/2014 21:34

I am glad to see some other people in the same situation as me, it is nice to know there are some other people who are overweight and TTC.

Drania · 08/09/2014 21:47

17st and TTC #1 here - relieved that I'm not the only one! FX everyone. Smile

Emilyjane11 · 08/09/2014 21:57

Ah im glad i posted this then. It's made me a lot more relaxed. I too am worrying about conceiving lucygooo let's keep each other posted? Well done for loosing the weight too, that's a big deal, i hope j do as well as you.

Good luck ladies im sure we will all be fine :)

I was lucky to be in an area where the community midwives were keen on home births, and though I had long labours, they were pretty uneventful. I was also only 5-10 minutes drive from hospital, and utterly trusted my midwives, and their instincts, so that, even if they had had no clinical indications, but simply had a bad feeling and wanted me to transfer, I would have done so.

TheDalek · 09/09/2014 00:46

I'm size 16, TTC #1 for four months. I've got pretty messed up eating habits anyway but I've been trying to get more exercise. A lot of my friend have been raving about ParkRun but the nearest one is hours away and I HATE running. Tbh, I hate most of the exercise I could do reasonably regularly. I'm lazy but I'm going to the gym often now. Also been looking at my portion sizes and have reduced them gradually.
