Folic acid

Is there anyone here who knows lots about it?

I had a child, in the uk, and when we were there the recommended dosage was 400 micrograms.

I am now living overseas. Not yet pregnant, but ttc. I decided to take folic acid prior to (hopefully!) getting pregnant, and the recommended dosage here is 5 mg, which, (I may be wrong about this, only doing it through google) seems to be 5000 micrograms.

Seems like a huge difference.

So, I have a few questions:

  1. Is this amount of folic acid dangerous? Or is there a good reason it's recommended in such high doses?
  1. Last year I miscarried at 6 weeks, and I was taking this dosage, and I have always wondered if that was something that contributed to it. I also worried about everything else, and know I'm probably being irrational.

What I'd really like to know is if this dosage of folic acid is potentially dangerous or not? Does anyone know?

5mg is usually prescribed for people at high risk of a fetus with a neural defect.
The NHS mentions this

Folic acid is water soluble, so you will wee out any extra (as long as you are suitable hydrated)

UK would say this level is excessive for everyone, but it is not a dangerous intake.

5mg is recommended if you've had a child with tubal defects or you're overweight. I've been taking 4 mg myself but like you not sure if that's right or not.

Thanks. I think my main worry is if such a high dose can cause miscarriage. I might just take the sanatogen ones, as I think this will just keep worrying me
