TTC when overweight

We are just starting to TTC and I am overweight and I know this will have an impact. I am quite big at a size 22. That said I have lost 33 pounds this year and I am continuing to lose it so hopefully I won't be a size 22 forever. Will being so overweight stop me from getting pregnant? Is it even worth TTC when I am so big? Thank you for any replies or advice.

I don't think it will stop you getting pregnant as long as your periods are in a regular cycle (this is what I found when researching the same issue ttc as a size 16) obviously the healthier you are the better but you still have chances

Yes I really want to be as healthy as possible, hopefully I can continue to slim down,

Does anyone else have any experience of TTC when overweight?

I have been overweight pretty much all my life.

I was a size 14/16 when I fell pregnant with my dd (unplanned, conceived whilst on the pill)

I was a size 20 when ttc baby no.2. It took 2 months to fall pregnant.

I was a size 22 when ttc baby no.3. It took one month to fall pregnant but I miscarried, it then took one more month to fall pregnant which resulted in ds2. I'm concentrating more in losing weight now than ttc.

Have some faith in your body's ability :) Flowers

Thank you CherryPie, that is very encouraging.

I struggled at a size 24 and it took us 16 months to conceive. However I think that being on birth control for so long effected my hormones which is why I wasn't ovulating. My GP still prescribed me clomid even though I was overweight and I conceived on the 3rd cycle of that.
I did develop gestational diabetes but had an otherwise healthy pregnancy and now have a healthy 10 month old DS.
Due to the restricted GD diet I ended up 4 stone lighter the week after I gave birth than I was when we conceived. I'm determined to shift the rest of the weight before TTC again to try to reduce the risk of developing GD this time.

How did you know you weren't ovulating?

I know GD is a risk.

I wish I hadn't let myself get like this :(

Don't best yourself up creamhearts Flowers

We all have wobbly days (literally!!) get yourself some cheap ovulation tests off eBay or Amazon, maybe a thermometer too and chart your cycle. It will occupy your mind as well as help to pass the days of your cycle x

was 15 stone when ttc with both children. Took 3 months the first time and 6 months the 2nd time. Had borderline GD with dd but was controlled by diet. She was 7lb 11oz so not big. Had no issues when pregnant with ds. He was 7lb 13oz.

AngusAndElspethsThistleWhistle · 14/08/2014 19:24

I was a 22 when I got pregnant. I had a very healthy pregnancy and watched what I ate. No GD and was lighter than my pre-preg weight the day after giving birth.

DD is now 9 months and I am 5 stones lighter due to healthy eating, exercise and breastfeeding.

Oh that is encouraging, thank you for sharing your experiences with me :)

Creamshearts - I used to chart my temps and because my cycles were all over the place the GP did blood tests. Both my charts and blood tests showed I wasn't ovulating.

Apparently if your weight is preventing ovulation (which it can, something to do with body fat and hormones) then losing just 10% can be enough to kick start it.

Plenty of larger women get pregnant easily though and have healthy pregnancies and babies. Best of luck Thanks

Thank you for clarifying, I think I am going to chart my temps and see how that goes.
