Getting ready to start our family

Hi Mumsnet members, I'm new to Mumsnet, I've just registered. My partner and I have decided we really want a family, most of my friends had kids a while ago, I am slightly older but the time is right for us now and this site has been recommended to me for great hints and tips and sharing my journey with other Mums. I had my coil out yesterday, I was slightly concerned as the nurse said I would have a bleed but I never did and so with no period I don't know how to work out when is best to conceive or know how long it might take!!!!!! Any advice?

Hi Bella, I'm just starting out too - exciting! I actually have a DS (= dear son) from a previous relationship so it shouldn't feel so new and exciting, but he was an accident, so I've never done the TTC thing before!

Was your coil a standard copper one or was it a Mirena type one with hormones? With hormonal contraception it takes a few days for the hormones to come out of your system so you should have a bleed 3-4 days after you've stopped taking them (or had the thing removed).

No concrete advice, which you seem to be looking for. Just opinions.

When best to conceive? I think you'll have to wait for your next period and work it out from the assumed point of ovulation (usually around the mid-cycle). You may have to have a few periods before you can work out your most likely time of ovulation.

How long to conceive? Who knows.

I'm wishing you all you hope for.

Hey, thanks for replying to my message, and for telling me what DS stands for!!!! I didn't have a clue. My partner has 2 children from a previous relationship but I haven't got any and really want to be a Mum.

It was a mirena coil, it came out yesterday. However I have used the coil for years and every 2 years or so I have it. Taken out so I have a period and make sure it's in working order so to speak!!!! But usually I bleed within a couple of hours so now I'm worried!!!!

I noticed the flag on your account Re you blogging from Germany? I'm in the UK x

Yes DS, DD (dear daughter) DH (dear husband) DP (dear partner) all used a lot on this website. There's an acronyms list at the top if you get lost but nobody will mind if you ask :)

I am living in Germany yes but the flag is for the world cup, so if you see others with flags, it doesn't necessarily mean they live in that country. Mumsnet is a UK based site so the vast majority of posters are based in the UK but of course you get people from all over. I'm British, only moved here last year.

Maybe your period is taking longer this time because you're excited and nervous? I know it usually takes me 3-4 days when I come off the pill.

Bellabutterfly2014 · 12/07/2014 21:26

Hi Bertiebotts, yes, I am sure I'll get used to them all! I guess being in Germany having the site is a good way to connect to "back home" as it were.
I think you're maybe right, I am annoyed as my partner is on nights this week and so might be afew days before anything happens!!!!!!! I don't want to end up being ovulation obsessed ringing him up at work demanding he comes home as I'm ovulating!!!!!!!
I am very very excited, been taking folic acid for 6 weeks, joined slimming world and have lost 2 stone now so I am trying really hard. It's different for my partner as he already has 2 kids and if it doesn't happen I'll be devastated and I am sure I fact I know he'd support me but it's not as bad for him already having a son and a daughter.
X

Slow down Grin I think they say to try for a year and if you have problems after a year then go and get checked out, so if you expect it to take about a year to happen, you should be pleasantly surprised.

Bellabutterfly2014 · 12/07/2014 21:51

I'm just very very excited!!!! Hopefully it won't take a year but I am doing all I can to maximise my chances!!! Definitely feel better after loosing 2 stone and going to keep going with it, it says on the slimming world website that it's safe to do whilst pregnant and can be a good way to avoid diabetes during pregnancy so will see how I go but if I can loose a bit first then any gains will hopefully be less than that which means I don't have to spend a fortune on maternity gear x

Well you'll have to get maternity clothes anyway, the bump does get quite big even if you're a stick! :)

Bellabutterfly2014 · 12/07/2014 21:58

I wish I was a stick!!! I was about an 18 top 20 bottom and now I'm a 14-16 top and still an 18 bottom but I do feel better for it and lots of girls at the group have done the plan whilst pregnant so I am going to try to stick to it!!!!! For as long as I can anyway! Plus I was worried that people wouldn't even know I was pregnant and just think I was fat!!!!!!
