IVF Would I have to pay?

Had secondary infertility for 16 months. Have one dd lost 2nd dd last year stillborn.

I am 39 (and two months!).I ovulate every month and my consultant wants to start me on clomid which I am very reluctant to take.

I am wondering whats my chances of getting IVF for free? I think as I have a child I have no chance but somebody said I might get one session free?

the government guidelines so far are that if you already have one child then you have to pay if you want fertility treatment such as ivf

sorry its not the news you want to hear, and i hope you get pg naturally very soon.

any reason why you are reluctant to take clomid...perhaps you wont have nothing to lose by taking it in the hope that it boosts egg growth.

has you and your partner had all the necessary test done?

zdl · 09/09/2006 23:01

I think the chances are low, but it depends where you live. You have to talk to your consultant.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/09/2006 06:41

Do you have a diagnosis of the underlying problem?. I am wondering what tests both of you have had done to date.

I am wondering also why your cons wants you to take clomid. Have blood tests shown ovulation each month?. This is the only indicator I would use to see if ovulation is happening.

Has your man been tested as well as your good self?. If he hasn't been tested then I would ask awkward questions. BTW any test results done over six months ago should be discounted - you need up to date results.

You will need to pay for IVF; the criteria for IVF depends on where you live as well. There is bound to be a list.

It may be that you won't need IVF at all but some other treatment option.

katierocket · 10/09/2006 07:50

I think it does depend where you live though. There are a few NHS trusts that will give you one cycle for free but generally you have to pay if you already have one child.

trinityshiftingherleatheryarse · 10/09/2006 07:56

why are you reluctant to try clomid?
And do you know what the problem is?

LunarSea · 10/09/2006 14:29

It depends upon where you live.

Here we were told that we couldn't even get a referal (even for initial investigations/clomid, etc, not IVF) when we didn't have any children, just a history of one miscarriage after 18 months of trying, and then another 2 and a half years of trying unsuccesfully after that. One conception, even if the outcome isn't successful is enough to disqualify you for ever it seems.

On the other hand I do have a friend who lives in a different area who has had NHS IVF trying for her second.

Twiglett · 10/09/2006 14:33

Take the clomid .. you have a far better chance of conceiving than on IVF

and no unfortunately over 35 and with a child .. you won't get IVF on NHS

(I took the clomid for secondary infertility .. if you have any questions please ask)

Twiglett · 10/09/2006 14:34

also chance of a succesful pregnancy on IVF at 39 is not great

Twiglett · 10/09/2006 14:35

how long is your post-luteal phase (from ovulation to start of period)

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 10/09/2006 21:57

My period lasts 28 days and I ovulate every month day 13-24
I have had all tests. My fsh levels indicated a fertile age of 33 (dont know how they tell but all i wanted to know was I was not approaching the change!!)
I have had lap and dye, nothing to tell there all in good order as is dh swimmers

Cons says its in my head following death of daughter last year. But I am worried about clomid as i thought you only get it if you dont ovulate and I am worried that I might 'over' ovulate (sorry dont know what correct term is) and have a multiple birth or it might lead to some other problem

take the clomid at least for 3-6 months. IVF is horrendous and should be done as an absolute last resort. No reason why clomid wouldn't work as well as (or better than) IVF if there are no other reasons for lack of pregnancy.

suejoneziscalmernow · 10/09/2006 22:03

Hyperstimulation is far, far more common with IVF than clomid. I produced 30 follicles and was very ill on one of my IVF cycles.

coggy · 10/09/2006 22:31

Chocolate P.....they scan you to check if you are hyper-stimulated.
If they see you have too many follicles they advise you to only have protected sex as a precaution against very multiple pregnancys.

Were you surprised by your cons diagnosis?
I think I would have been a bit peeved myself!!
Glad mine hasn't said that to me!!!!!

I ovulate regularly and I've still been given clomid twice....and I have NO side effects at all!!!
X

Well that's what I am worried about. When I saw cons in June he said it was psychological and now that I have had a good 'flushing out' I should get pregnant. He said come back in Nov and if your not pregnant I will put you on clomid so I assumed he would be monitoring this with scans and so on.When I saw my GP in July she said that the cons had wrote to her and told her to start me on it straight away and she said she was concerned as as she put it "Its all very well him saying put you on it now, but is he going to monitor the situation?" so we decided that we would leave it till Sept and then at least when i go to see him in Nov,I will have been taking it for a couple of months. But Sept is here and I am giving ot one LAST try naturally

fingers (but not legs) crossed eh?

peanut - in Manchester the NHS waiting list for IVF is 2 years! and unfortunately you can't have it on the NHS if you already have a child.

coggy · 12/09/2006 19:52

I think it's just great to have as a back up.

I am quite worried about IUI but I know that I'll get to a day and think 'right...that's it...' and I'll be really pleased to be getting on with it.

Good to know there's a back-up plan around the corner I always think.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 12/09/2006 20:46
