When is best time to DTD?

Hi

I have one DD and we are starting to TTC #2. We were really lucky the first time round and fell pregnant after 2 months. It has already taken longer than that and I'm just wondering when is the best time to DTD? I never gave it any thought last time but am thinking I better start to think about it a bit more now!

14 days before your period is when you ovulate, I believe. There are other signs too- sorry if TMI but when your vaginal discharge is clear and sticky (they call it egg white mucus) then you are good to go. You can get ovulation sticks which identify when you are ovulating but I found that they just helped me start to get a feel for when I was ovulating. There are lots of technical things you can do like charting temperature but that's probably too in depth at this stage for you! For most people, doing it around ovulation roughly should do the trick- sperm can stay alive for a few days so you don't need to nail the right day exactly.

If you're at the point of asking this, it implies that you're keen but not yet deeply into the obsessive nightmare of TTC over a long time.

I would say, in that case, that the best time to do it is within 2 days of ovulation either side with minimal conversation about this with your DP. The slight flexibility means you'll be less likely to become enraged if he is not in the mood at exactly the right time and the lack of precision means he's less likely to suffer from performance anxiety or feel like a prize bull. If you work out (but don't say) when you ovulate and work within a 3-4 day window either side, pref twice, two days apart, you will probably get up the duff and save your sanity if it takes more than a couple of months.

Just want to dispel the myth...not all women ovulate 14 days before their period. That's the average, but for some its shorter (7 days) or longer (17/18 days)

I go with the as-much-as-possible method - so every day or two throughout my cycle. And then I don't have to calculate anything. But I really like having sex anyway and enjoy any excuse!

I think it's much easier to have regular sex (and nicer for your relationship) than it is to accurately predict when you ovulate which can be a bit tricky in some women. (and stressful).

I think this is what fertility experts advise too - I think every 2-3 days throughout your entire cycle and you're covered.

Going by my scan dates, I must have ovulated on day 7 with my first pregnancy despite having a very regular 28 day cycle. So nowhere near the 14 days before period typically quoted.

Have a google for the "sperm meets egg plan" that's a good guide.
