After the birth of our DD2 three & a half years ago DP and I decided we'd have no more children. I changed my mind about a year in and DP...well, he wasn't so keen.

Today after discussing our options he said he was more than happy to try for one more! I'm overjoyed, obviously but we've decided to wait to come off Implanon until after Christmas so we can get DD2 off into nursery in September and get Christmas out of the way. I'm only 25 so it's not a big deal to start TTC straight away but the women on my mum's side have hit menopause at 30 or before so I'm a little scared to wait much longer.

I'm overweight so I want to lose two stone before and we're both smokers so as of today I've started vaping to get off the cigarettes for good and give my body time to adjust before another pregnancy. Both DD's were high risk (Polyhydramnios) and DD2's birth was traumatic with a retained placenta requiring manual removal in surgery. I know there's nothing I can really do to prevent it happening again but does anyone have advice on how to get myself in the best shape?

For instance, how soon before TTC should I start taking folic acid? How else would you recommend preparing physically? I thought this would be the best place to ask. Also, sorry for the long introduction post! Blush

Hey sheandlifex

I started this thread....

The other day about waiting for ttc, there's a handful of us in the same boat, also a couple of us who need to lose weight if you want to join us over there Smile

I probably sound like a broken record if people have seen my name before but I would recommend getting the rod out asap and use condoms until after xmas. Some people go back to normal straight away after hormonal birth control, others it takes a few months. I had mine out 18 months ago and have only just had 2 normal-ish cycles. I know I'm not the only one who has had issues.
There is no research to suggest that HBC causes cycles issues after stopping use but that's because there is no research (that I can find - if anyone knows of any please let me know Smile ). Any official information online is about how well it works as contraception.
If you are not worried about that then your plan sounds good - getting healthy and taking folic acid up to 3 months before trying.

I am worried about not returning to normal. I came off the depo 18 months before the implant and only had one real cycle before. I chose the implant as the nurse said it would be immediately reversible but if people have had issues I'll definitely be looking into non-hormonal birth control much sooner. Thank you!

Nurses usually advise that you can go back to normal immediately after removal. They want to minimise the risk of unwanted pregnancy so will want people to understand the risk of not using other birth control after having it removed. Every Dr I've spoken to has said it's very common for women to take a while for their cycles to regulate after HBC
