Hello! I just got diagnosed with PCOS today... Am cautiously optimistic as I think I'm going to be getting some good treatment. DH and I are ttc, and I was wondering if any of you Mumsnetters are in the same boat as us!! Thought it might be nice to share war stories and treatment progress etc somewhere, as there hasn't been an active PCOS thread in a while on here... Share your stories with me!! Smile

Ok,I admit it. I poas today, it wasn't even the fmu. I am so weak! But now they really are in the bottom of a box and I'm not testing until Wednesday.

1moretime, I guess you will have to temp for a couple of cycles before anything makes sense. If I'm not lucky this month, I might start temping myself too.

1moretime · 09/06/2014 15:47

Haha! Ok i believe that you wont poas again until wed....honest ;)

Yes i guess i will have to temp for a bit longer to see a regular pattern xx

My doc is really helpful but the next closest hosp is 30/40 miles away and I can't get there. I'm used to it. If I need more clomid I will phone the hosp and try to get some answers.

ChandlersFarang · 10/06/2014 06:18

Well I'm glad your doc is nice at least, Kurama... I thought you could become resistant to clomid if you took it for too long?

Have been looking into non-insulin resistant PCOS lately, as I came across the idea that there are two 'types' of PCOS. Type 1 with insulin resistance, high testosterone - typically causing increased hair and weight gain. Type 2 sounds more like me - testosterone and weight can be normal, but ovaries appear polycystic on an ultrasound, get irregular periods, etc. On the latter I am still only 6 months off the pill (which I was on for almost 14 years)... I read somewhere that type 2 could be caused by prolonged periods on the pill as a suggested hypothesis. Anyone else know anything about these two types? I guess I'll know more once I get my blood tested.

Am speaking to a UK doctor today (as I need to book in for a blood test when I'm back home from Thailand over the next month, as that's when CD2 of my next cycle is likely to fall). Will be interesting to see what a UK doctor has to say about this - so far have only been dealt with by Thai private doctors and a Chinese acupuncturist...!!

As you rightly surmise not all PCOSers are insulin resistant. It is anyway a very individualistic disorder.

I am more like "type 2" as well; in my case anyway I think it has come down the male line in terms of genetics (male pattern baldness seems to be of some relevance here). My periods started to go haywire upon onset of menses; its a condition to my mind that has always been there. There is no real evidence to suggest that the pill is responsible for failure to ovulate but it can certainly mask symptoms.

kurama · 10/06/2014 06:55

you prob can chandlers.... thats going on my list of questions to ask!

kimblesj · 10/06/2014 07:27

Hi,

I was diagnosed with PCOS nearly 4 years ago after having my second son. I put on lots of weight in pregnancy and couldn't shift it. I also couldn't conceive again.
Eventually i was put on metformin after 2 years of trying to conceive and fell pregnant within 6 months and lost about 2 stone.
We now have an 8 month old son and want to try for our last baby.
I'm going try and shed some weight and ask for metformin again.
I did notice that my last pregnancy was awful. I got full blow gestational diabetes and my son suffered because of it. I want to be As healthy as I can this time!

ChandlersFarang · 11/06/2014 02:29

Kimbles thanks so much for your success story too - but sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes! If you lose weight, I guess that must reduce the risk of it happening again? Good luck!!

So I had an interesting chat with my UK GP yesterday. She said that I definitely shouldn't have been diagnosed with PCOS from just an ultrasound seeing as I don't present any of the other symptoms apart from disturbed menstrual cycles, which could still be blamed on stopping the pill 6 months ago. Appaz up to a third of women's ovaries appear polycystic on an ultrasound, and only 5-15% have PCOS (even those diagnosed vary in condition, seems a PCOS diagnosis can be a bit subjective).

Anyway she's going to take my bloods next week, and I'll call for the results a week later. So I should know what's what before I go to Glastonbury - will be celebrating or commiserating there which is a bit weird! At least I'll be distracted...

kurama · 13/06/2014 23:24

Hi I'm tired and poorly still but survivingShock af due from tomoro.....hope the red bitch stays away!Wink

LAM1 · 13/06/2014 23:56

Blimey! Treatment certainly various...I have been waiting ages for any action. Diagnosis came about randomly, DH tests and HSG pretty quick. But have been waiting since Feb for the follow up. Hosp told me this week I need clomid and am now waiting for another clinic for them to prescribe it and monitor me. Not sure why the hosp can't give it out when it seems some doctors can!?

Congrats to Woodwaj, great news! I recognise your name from other PCOS threads.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 14/06/2014 00:04

I'm just coming on to this thread to give you a little bit of hope. I have such a classic PCOS, my scan ended up in a couple of medical text books. I always like to say, if you're going to have PCOS, you may as well do it prettily.

Anyway, I now have 4 kids, so a diagnosis of PCOS doesn't necessarily mean infertility. One was conceived with Clomid, one with Metaformin and 2 happy accidents.

So, good luck to all of you that are trying.

1moretime · 14/06/2014 07:28

Lam i was prescribed the vanique cream from my gp for the hair growth but had to be referred to a consultant before i was prescribed Metformin.

ThewholeOfTheSpoon wow thank you for sharing your wonderful story :-)
Just goes to show that you can still go on to have dc xx

Hibou7688 · 14/06/2014 07:37

Hey all, I been ttc for around 10 months now, have long cycles of around 40 days. I've always quietly wondered about pcos. When could I go to drs?

kurama · 14/06/2014 21:05

go to docs now hibou see what they say .
no sign of af yet but also bfn this morn on ic...

ChandlersFarang · 15/06/2014 09:48

Spoon, what a fab success story, thanks for sharing!Grin

So I'm 8DPO in my cycle where I had the injections. Had lots of post-ov symptoms (sensitive nips, increased creamy CM) for first 5-6 days, but now not a lot going on! Reminding myself not everyone gets symptoms this early (although the Internet really would have you believe otherwise!). But also don't expect a BFP the same month I found out my ovaries are polycystic frankly! Shock

Am booked in for blood tests at my GP in the UK as am going to be in the UK (or on a longhaul flight!) when AF shows tues/weds this week.

Hibou - I got diagnosed abroad, but from what I've heard it takes a while to get through the NHS diagnosis process. I'm not really sure how it works but if you have suspicions i'd get them checked out.

Fx for you Kurama that AF stays away! X x

Donttellmetorelax · 16/06/2014 11:27

Hi ladies, how is everyone doing?

I don't have Internet in the new house just yet, I'm in Starbucks at the moment and catching up with the thread.

Af arrived at the end of last week, boooo, but I got a 28 days cycle, yayyy! I don't know if it's due to the inositol and agnus castus, but I'm going to keep taking them this cycle.

Good luck to everyone who is having tests and docs appointments.
