Hi Bubbly

I am also about to start my first attempt at icsi and will try to answer your questions although I am sure there are alot more MN members who know more than me....

  1. I have a chat & plan appointment 14th Sept where I think we discuss when to start down reg and teach me how to inject (Yuk!) 2 & 3) I believe you down reg to remove your natural hormones and this is done for 2 to 3 weeks (my clinic use injections for down reg but some use nasal sprays).
  2. When down reg is complete you start 'stimming' - this is where you inject artificial hormones to induce major ovulation. I think stimming is done for about 2 wks and can be injections twice a day.
  3. When stimming they scan you to follow progress of folicules (scans can be up to 3 times a week) and when you are ready (ie - lots of eggs) they perform egg collection. The sperm collection is on same day and Egg transfer is usually 2/3 days after.

All in all - about 6 weeks start to finish.

I hope this is of some help - I am a novice to it all as well but my Sis in law had 6 attempts at IVF/ICSI so I have some idea....

Good luck

Your friend could prob get a copy of the protocol from the clinic if she asks.

I had iui, not icsi but I imagine the protocol is pretty similar.

  1. prob at beginning of cycle 2 Day 21 of cycle for the whole of the treatment so you don't spontaneously ovulate.
  2. I did and it's the most common I think but I think they also use tablets, not sure.
  3. Start injections (or at least I did) day 3 of next cycle which could be delayed due to down regging.
  4. For me typically (I did it 5 times) it was about 10 weeks I think. A long time and not for the faint hearted. Good luck to your friend

This is all from memory as I went through this 5 years ago

  1. Assuming the consultation and blood tests have been completed then I believe it's around the start of your period

  2. 21 days after the above and I think it's for about 2 weeks and they then do a scan to check it's worked

  3. I used a nasal spray but there may be other options. It wasn't too bad. I think it had to be done 3 times a day

  4. Then the injections start. These are done at home and I did mine in the evening. I was only on the drugs for just over a week as I was in danger of hyperstimulating and had too many follicles. You may need to inject for 2 weeks or more

Then the final injection is done, I think about 36 hours before they remove the eggs. The only bit that differs from IVF is that the sperm is injected into the eggs rather than left to get on with it.

2 days later the embyros put into the uterus and I inserted pesseries for the next 2 weeks to keep the hormones correct. 2 weeks after the embyroes are put back in a pregnancy test is done

  1. From the start of your period it should take 6-8 weeks. However, from the very beginning including consultations can take 4 months

The HFEA website is very good and has a list of clinics and their results.

Hi guys,

This is the first time in my life I've been in a forum or chat room of any sorts, so apologies if I get things wrong, but I need some friendly advice?? My partner and I have been trying for a baby for almost a year. I've been showing signs of early menopause at 35yrs (damn!), and with only one ovary, started having the usual tests. On my last trip to the hospital, I was told the following. My P swimmers are fine, my hormone levels are normal, I'm ovulating fine, I'm rubella immune and my tubes are clear....BUT....they mentioned that my uterus is strange.!! rudimentary uturine cavity???? (DUH!!), when I asked what this meant, the doctor told me, I may have problems carrying a baby as my uterus might be too small. I have an ultrasound booked for the 25th sept, but as you can imagine we are at our wits end.
Has anyone heard of this, or had any experience of this?? We only considered the probability of not conceiving, not carrying....it's awful.!!!

No experience or advice but you may want to start a seperate thread on this topic - you may get more help that way. I am sue somone will know something here - they usually do!

BudaBabe · 31/08/2006 22:12

sorry that post aimed at smerchas!

With regard to Op - I am about to start IVF (next week depending on arrival of AF) and have been told that here in Budapest the protocol is much shorter than my previous one (5 years ago) and will take 2 weeks! Anyone any experience of the "short" protocol???
