Stupid PCOS. How I wish for shag week rather than shag-4-months.

I'm waiting for a referral to the fertility clinic (Whittington) to come through - does anyone have any experience of how long this might take? Any tips on what I can usefully do in the meantime to either (i) encourage the ovaries or (ii) stay sane?

Thank you all!

Hi fruit. Really sorry your having a shit time. My referral was quick a couple of weeks but my appointment was 3 months away when it came. Diet really helps with pcos. Have you already had it confirmed that it is pcos? They might put you on clomid right away in that case

fruitandfibre · 17/05/2014 08:45

Thanks woodwaj. Yes I had it diagnosed about 4 years ago, so I don't know if they'll want to check if anything has changed since then first. Hopefully I can get started quickly! My BMI is 20 so I don't want to lose weight but maybe there are some changes I can make anyway, does anyone have experience of success with this? Thank you!

Hey there! Sorry you´re having such a hard time. I have PCO with a healthy BMI too, so can totally understand!

Do you know if you´re actually ovulating? If you´re on CD112 now, it´s likely that, when your period does come, it will just be because the lining has got too heavy and so has shed for that reason, not because of ovulation. Sorry if that´s not what you want to hear. You could ask your dr to presrcibe progesterone to induce a bleed, so at least you can start from a clean sheet?

I really hoped that I could resolve by PCO naturally and tried everything. My dr put me on Agnucaston (1st 1 pill a day and then 2), but that didn´t really do anything. I would´nt take it without discussing with your dr first though, as in some cases it can really mess up your cycles even more. The same goes for taking any other herbal remedies which are often recommended on the internet.

Things you can do which shouldn´t cause any problems are trying to cut down on refined sugar (even if you are a healthy weight) due to the insulin resistance often linked to PCOS. Taking 1/2 tsp of cinnamon every day is also supposed to stabilise blood sugar.

There have also been Italian studies recently that taking Inositol (2-4 g a day) can help bring on ovulation (or make it come earlier) in patients with PCOS. Apparently there are no dangers to taking this dosage as it´s essentially a B vitamin. I tried it for a few months but didn´t really feel it made a difference. There are lots of positive reports of it working though.

A useful site (which also has an article on Inositol) is PCOS Diva. This is written by a lady who eventually got pregnant naturally with PCOS after having fertility treatment initially. It has loads of advice which might be helpful to follow whilst you waiting for a referral.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you Chloe, it's really kind of you to take the time to write about your experience. I will definitely look into Inositol. I definitely ovulated in November and January (56 then 67 day cycles ) but nothing since then. I try to avoid sugar but could always do better! Did anything work for you in the end?

Yes sugar but also white carbs so go gor brown where possible
My bmi is about 23 but has also been low and same issue. Though never really long cycles just irregular.
I have found metformin is really helping i am now getting ewcm which must be an improvement!
I also have hypothyroidism which often coincides with pcos.

woodwaj · 17/05/2014 14:01

I was prescribed norethisterone to start a period so add that to your list of questions

naty1 · 17/05/2014 14:39

Did they do bloods to see if you are ovulating because you may or may not with pcos?
Has you partner done a SA?
(Turned out our issue was with OH)

fruitandfibre · 17/05/2014 15:19

I have hypothyroidism too, but it has been stable (1) for a few years so I hope that's ok. My bloods revealed no ovulation but as it was day 88 I wasn't too hopeful. No problems with DH! I've had a look at the inositol research and it looks really promising so will definitely ask about that too.

Do you mean a tsh of 1? Thats good

fruitandfibre · 17/05/2014 16:38

Yes TSH is 1, it took a while to get there but I've been on 125 mcg of levothyroxine for a few years now and it is fine. I'd hoped that might have brought my cycles back but no such luck.

That is good, are you in uk as my gp only seems to want me on minimum so was hapoy when mine was 4. :(
That is odd though
Hopefully the clinic will know whats causing it.
Maybe metformin might work
How do you know you ovulated those other months, bloods?

fruitandfibre · 18/05/2014 11:33

Hi Naty, I am in the UK. My GP said a TSH between 1 and 2 was ideal for TTC so you might want to go back if you're still too high.

I didn't have blood tests those months but tracked my temp so know I ovulated. FF is having trouble fitting my chart on the screen this month...
