Ttc with coil?

Hey all,

Recently decided to start Ttc for DC 2. Problem is I have the coil, and I seem to be met with a wall of silence when requesting it out. Apparently they want it in the full five years.

Can't I still get pregnant with the coil in? What are the chances? I feel a lil but saddened that I am unable to start trying because it's about a month until I can do so properly.

Can they do that? Ttc is a legitimate reason for wanting it out.

In fact, just not wanting something in your body anymore is reason alone for removal.

Ahhh I had a similar issue when I requested my implant to be removed a few years ago! Basically it costs the NHS money so they often make a big song and dance about taking it out after being in for only a short while. They CANNOT force you to leave it in! You need to be more forceful and tell them you are ttc. Don't take no for an answer. It is highly unlikely you will get pregnant with the coil in seeing as it's a contraceptive!

FreeSpirit89 · 14/05/2014 17:49

That's what I thought but I read somewhere on lady did get pregnant with the coil in.

I have spoken to the family planning clinic and have an appt for 27th but that's just for paperwork as I'm a new patient, so who knows how long it will be before I can have the procedure done.

I had a row with my gp about it, basically saying it's my right to have it removed but she wouldn't budge. I even spoke to the practice manager who agreed with me but couldn't make the GP do it for me, and because she's the only female gp at the practice I'm stuck!

Just feeling a lil disheartened before I've when started.

What reason did the GP give for refusing to remove it? Do they need you to book a double appointment? Why can't they give you a timescale? I'd speak with the practice manager again and ask for a proper explanation otherwise ask for their complaints procedure and lodge a formal complaint.

WottaMess · 14/05/2014 18:36

Is female gp that much of an issue? If they have another trained in the procedure you could see another doc. My vote would be fpc though.

TheTertiumSquid · 14/05/2014 18:37

That's shocking! I had a coil for 1.5 years between babies. When I wanted to ttc I just made an appointment with the iud doctor, she asked why I wanted it out, I said I wanted another baby and she took it out.
If I were you I would make a formal complaint about the doctor. Or just say in writing you will consult a solicitor, surely she is denying you the right to a family life?
Or you could just see another doctor eg in the gum or family planning clinic?

WottaMess · 14/05/2014 18:37

And getting pg with the coil is a failure on the part of the coil. It can be dangerous (more likely robe ectopic etc) but shouldn't happen. So if you're tic you need it out.

WottaMess · 14/05/2014 18:38

To be not robe - blooming phone!

Ajords1 · 14/05/2014 19:06

I had the mirena fitted dec 2012 and had it out sept 2013 - 9 months - no questions asked - it's your body - that is outrageous!!! Agree asking to see if male gp would do it......and defo a agree you should take further action re the female gp - completely unethical behaviour!

FreeSpirit89 · 14/05/2014 19:19

I am on the waiting lost for the male GP but his appointments are into July, will have to wait it out. I'm probably being unreasonable about the timescale but when I know the female GP can do it, but won't it angers me more.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I will make a formal complaint, I don't have the money for a solicitor. Just feel a lil off about the resign being made but nothing happening (so to speak)

When you have your coil removed all the dr or nurse will do is hold onto the strings and pull gently. Easier during period when cervix slightly open.
Hth :)

Purplecircle · 14/05/2014 20:30

The practice nurse took mine out.
I've heard of people taking their own out.
All the nurse did was pull the strings
I'd make an appt with the nurse
You might find more info online about how to remove yourself
Good luck

FreeSpirit89 · 15/05/2014 10:08

Thank you for the advice everyone x

Good lord I hope the chances of getting pregnant with the coil in are fairly remote Confused

I would be complaining to the PCT and asking the FP clinic if they can do it the same day as the paperwork! Our local FP clinic has a walk in service. Can you investigate if you have that locally?

I would not advocate taking it out yourself [boak] but then it did take 45 mins and a lot of effing and jeffing on the part of the FP consultant to get mine in
