hi, i am new to this, but while on the topic, has anyone tried a home kit, i found a semen analysis kit in boots and wondered if that would be any use while we wait until its time to see the DR etc xx

Maybe2014 · 22/05/2014 19:37

Dont know but think its only about £80 at fertility clinic

victoria401 · 22/05/2014 22:44

The home tests only do quantity not quality. I wouldn't bother if I were you. Get it done properly :-)

victoria401 · 22/05/2014 22:45

My hubby's results are 100% antisperm antibodies. Not looking good for us :-(

naty1 · 23/05/2014 08:34

So what does that mean.
We never had any mention of antibodies.
Is his immune system killing them off?

victoria401 · 23/05/2014 10:28

There was a reading at the bottom of our form for a spermMAR test. I'm sure yours will be fine. Its quite a rare thing apparently. Just our luck :-(

naty1 · 23/05/2014 11:49

Does that mean icsi for you?

Maybe2014 · 23/05/2014 13:38

My sisters husband had the same issue with antibodies and were offered ICSI but wouldn't offer them any treatment unless he gave up smoking. So there's deffo a chance for you!!! Xx

thank you ladies x

naty1 · 23/05/2014 17:00

I hope he gave up!

victoria401 · 24/05/2014 09:09

My dh has 'given up' but he's puffing away on these e-cigs instead. I don't know how good/bad these things are. They still have nicotine. I can't seem to find anything anywhere about what it is in smoking that's bad for sperm. Whether its the nicotine or the tobacco/tar/other crap that's in fags.

Dh also needs to lose weight. I think they give you a BMI you need to be under for ivf? I'm fine though I'm a perfect BMI, well I'm just perfect full stop lol! ;-)

naty1 · 25/05/2014 00:09

Well they never asked about or weight OH. But may depend on clinic and thjs was about 2010. He was about bmi 30.
It may be worth scaring him that he may have too as he may have to.
Doesnt smoking block.arteries (can cause ED) so maybe impacts circulation.

victoria401 · 25/05/2014 09:54

I've read the NICE guidelines for referral and it mentions weight. I don't know what bmi dh actually is in comparison. They might mean mega huge fat, can't get through the door! I'll have to double check! I only really skim read it at the time anyway before we even had a diagnosis and never thought it would happen to us etc.

naty1 · 25/05/2014 13:25

Though you need to check the actual referral criteria for your area. It may be on hfea site, not sure. Some areas dont pay for eg if 1 person already has kids.
Also i believe most dont follow the recommended 3 rounds of ivf by NICE , i think mine did 1 ... As long as my bmi was under 30. Didnt smoke, no other kids.
I would be aware of how many they fund vs how many you think you could go through and work out if you need to save up for any extra ones. Or also if ideally you want more kids (certainly our area doesnt fund for a sibling even if you originally were allowed say 2. But might fund transfer of frozen embies.

Good luck encouraging him to lose weight
