Can you ovulate without detecting an LH surge?

For the past 3 months, I've been OPK testing all the freakin' time. Day or night. Never ever detected LH surge.

Has anyone had the same thing happen but actually DID get pregnant?

If I were you I'd maybe ask the doctors for a 21 day progesterone test which will tell if your levels are high enough for ov to have happened. If only to clear your mind, I'm sure you're fine - OPKs aren't always terribly accurate. Have you tried temping?

SnowBells · 29/01/2014 13:54

I'm awaiting outcome of bloodtest. GP appt scheduled for Monday. Temping is difficult with me as I have irregular cycles. Can you temp with an ear thermometer???

Temping should be helpful regardless of how irregular your cycles are. For most accurate results you need a mouth thermometer with 2 decimal places

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/01/2014 14:00

If irregular cycles keep happening then it is likely you are not ovulating regularly if at all. Such problems are caused by hormonal imbalances, a common culprit here is a condition called polycystic ovaries.

Do not use an ear thermometer or temp chart at all as this could well give you a chart nigh on impossible to interpret with any degree of accuracy. It could also become stressful.

Would focus on having a day 2 blood test done instead to check and compare your LH level against that of FSH. This would be far more reliable an indicator. If periods are irregular too, blood tests can be done according to calendar days e.g the 2nd of the month.

drbartlet · 29/01/2014 14:01

yes - i never got an LH surge on my opk but still got pg (with the help of clomid).
ear thermometer is fine i think. temping is good in that it will show whether you do ovulate, although it's too late by then, at least you will have an indication if ovulation is actually happening.
good luck x

drbartlet · 29/01/2014 14:03

oops - x-post.
attila sounds more knowledgeable than me RE temping so disregard what i said. just based on my own experience.

naty1 · 29/01/2014 14:06

I never found temping useful as due to (i believe) hypothyroidism i couldnt control my body temp.
It was always really low especially if the weather outside was cold.
I think a lot of pcos people get highs but it is not necessarily correctly showing ovulation just that lh is raised.
But you should still be able to temp with irregular cycles, it just won't help predict when you will o just that you have

The most reliable way to show a temperature shift is to take your temperature vaginally. You are looking for a pattern so you will see a series of lows and then a series of high temps after ovulation. It is really important to take your temperature at the same time every morning before you get out of bed or do anything. As if you take it at different times you wont have reliable data. Pay close attention to your cm as well, as the closer you get to ovulation the more egg white it becomes. You can use the temperature method to see whether you are ovulating or not and it does not matter how long or short your cycles are. I would recommend toni weschler book taking charge of your fertility and looking at her website as you can see examples of different charts on there. HTH

Similar to you OP I am also struggling with this. I have regular cycles so Dr thinks I am ovulating. Ihave polycystic ovaries but not the syndrome and conceived my first child no problem. My cycles are usually 30 days give or take a day. Been taking OPK for four months and no surge detected yet with the Boots or ClearBlue digi strips...just big empty circles :(. Going for the targeted approach as DH is away a lot with work. AF started on the 14th and lasted 8 days - brown blood at the beginning (sorry if TMI!!) I started to question whether it was an early MC but I think it was maybe just old AF. I started OPK testing at noon and 5pm from CD13 but no surge yet and today is CD17 :(. I would be interested to know if anyone thinks I've missed the boat this month or if it is still possible? If anything the OPK line is a very definite negative now but from CD13 to CD16 there was a faint pink line I think. Do you think this could mean that my surge was earlier? I just assumed with AF for 8 days that if anything I would ovulate later. Good luck OP x

I had very faint lines that would then disappear after a minute. I really don't know what's going on. Maybe my hormones are just not there?

I have suspected PCOS, but not confirmed as scan showed nothing, and old blood tests were "upside down" from what you see with PCOS. I don't know what that means. Waiting for results of new blood tests on Monday.

I would ask for a copy of any results.
Lh is usually two times fsh in pcos people, though both can be within lab normal levels.
Increased testosterone,
I think people with pcos probably would have positive opks as they measure the lh and that is ususally high with pcos.
But spme people ovulate earlier of later tgan they would expect.
Mine showed positive about 8 days before period (which is really short)

Snowbell my sister and I both have polycystic ovaries but managed to conceive. I used to have irregular cycles so it was tricky to work out my due date I seem to remember as my cycle could be anything from 25 to 60 days.

Since the pregnancy cycles seem to be more regular but no luck. I think I must be ovulating but not picking up on the signs.

Naty what is fsh? My cycles are around 30 days. Will do OPK again today CD18 but just wondering if worth it and also I am getting fed up of having to stop drinking so I can do the tests!

naty1 · 31/01/2014 10:52

Follicle stimulating hormone
I would go up to around cd22 of a 30 day cycle if you havent seen a positive one
Pregnancy can mess with hormones how old is baby?

supercaligirl · 31/01/2014 11:15

Thanks Nate. I have DS 3 years and had MC in August. I fell pregnant in June due to help of a positive OPK (tested very late at night 9pm) around CD15. Just negative results on OPK since Oct when I have been TTC again. But only been testing from around CD12 to CD19 and then giving up...

naty1 · 31/01/2014 11:52

If you know you have pcos may still be worth seeing dr to talk about it.
The insulin resistance associated can cause miscarriage.
(Though obviously you have had healthy baby already so you should be fine)
I am on metformin for ivf to reduce blood sugar to prevent mc.
How were you diagnosed, scan or bloods etc

However you must be ovulating as least sometimes.
I wonder if its just taking a while to get back to normal after mc?

supercaligirl · 31/01/2014 12:08

Quite possibly taking some time but was cheered by the Dr I saw back in Dec as she thought I was ovulating as regular cycles and evidence of recent ovulation on my ovary. She aslo thought although my ovaries were polycystic I did not have PCOS. My periods have been quite heavy and long and I was wondering if this month was an early MC as period long and the bleed for the first couple of days was brown/mucous.
Naty when did you start ivf?

naty1 · 31/01/2014 12:27

Yes cystic ovaries different to pcos 25% people may have cysts but it is the hormones imbalance with the cysts that cause the problems i think
I will start stimms next week
