I was just wondering what you lot have changed/added into your lives since trying to conceive, eg, drinking, smoking, gymming it, food etc.

It is all very confusing (eg. drinking too much it bad but if you didn't realise you were pregnant then it's fine??? eh!!) and was wondering what you guys have chosen to do and don't??

I have tried quite consciously not to change much. I don't smoke anyway and don't drink much - maybe a few drinks at the weekend. I do drink quite a lot of coffee and am happy that this is ok having read some research.

The one I really fixate on is hot baths for some reason. Oh and I take pregnacare conception.

buddhabee · 27/01/2014 12:35

i take folic acid and capsules and vitamin d - whats in the pregnacare?

It's basically a multivitamin with folic acid I think.

Copied from Boots-

Folic Acid – Pregnacare Conception provides 400mcg folic acid, the exact level recommended by the UK Department of Health for all women who are trying to conceive. As well as the healthy development of the foetal neural tube, folic acid may also play a role in conception, and is required in the first days and weeks of life, before you are even aware that you are pregnant.

Minerals with natural vitamin E – Important co-factors in enzymes, to help protect genetic material from free radical damage.

Vitamin B12 – Part of the B complex group of vitamins.

I've cut down on the alcohol, a lot. I treated myself to a few glasses of wine over the weekend but I won't drink during the week (not just for TTC reasons).

I'm trying to be a bit more active and eat healthier - again, not just for TTC reasons.

I take folic acid, vitamin c and vitamin d.

I'm watching this thread with interest (I'm new on here) DH and I have decided to start ttc at the end of the year. Is it worth starting to take folic acid in advance of ttc I wonder?

I don't drink alcohol that much, could give it up completely quite easily. I'm not one for exercising though!

buddhabee · 27/01/2014 13:11

i would start taking folic acid now, they say as soon as you come off your pill but i think i started about a month before that.

me and my hubby are both gym bunnies so we go to the gym almost everyday and our diet is pretty spot on - an unhealthy week for us is a couple of takeaways/diner with friends.

i don't drink a lot, not at all during the week but if we go out i may have a couple - more so cos i can't handle hangovers ha ha!! so that's not an issue.

i used to smoke a lot when younger but now it's about 2 a day (have been doing this for about 2 years) when i get home from work. hubby doesn't really smoke (every so often when we are out),

we have been doing it aunatural no poas of any kind - i know when i ovulate and that's about it (i can feel it - like a bus lol) and dtd every other day through the month.

just thought if i changed too much then it would stress me out more - but thought i'd see what everyone else was up to?

Not drinking, same amount of exercise, 7seas trying for a baby tablets etc

Cut down on caffeine last month & it nearly killed me as decaf teas just not the same. Been to NY this month so I've ate junk & guzzled fizzy but hey ho, back to semi healthy diet with lots of fruit x

Armadale · 27/01/2014 13:26

I'd stick to taking folic acid and stay away from a multivitamin supplement when ttc as a new study that has just come out suggests that taking one increases first trimester MC risk

eurochick · 27/01/2014 13:31

strawberry the NHS recommends taking folic acid for 3 months before you start trying, to build your levels up.

buddhabee · 27/01/2014 13:44

oh yes i used to be a complete caffeine junky (and pop) so have completely cut that back to maybe 1 can of coke a day. i don't drink coffee so have cute out all redbull type products as well.

i was having green tea instead of normal tea but read that that can make your folic acid not work so have one every so often but am sticking with fruit and peppermint tea (obsessed ha ha)

so not doing to bad on the caffeine front - feel a lot better for it too!

StrawberryCheese · 27/01/2014 15:35

Thanks eurochick.

buddhabee it sounds like you're all sorted, I wish I could describe myself as a gym bunny. Chocolate bunny is more fitting Grin

buddhabee · 27/01/2014 16:00

ha ha luckily hubby is gym bunny more like - if he wasn't i'd be dreadful lol!!

anyone else - has/haven't quit smoking whilst trying ttc!!

Hi, I cut down on my caffeine and tried to exercise a little and lose a bit of weight as I was a bit overweight so wanted to feel the best I could be in myself. Also did the usual folic acid etc. God luck!! xxx

babytinks89 · 27/01/2014 19:45

I smoke but massively cutting back.. I stopped smoking for 3 months using that vaporised cig, anyone used one of these pg? Or cut out all together......
Are nicotine patches safe when conceiving/pg??

happygoluckyinOz · 28/01/2014 08:45

I haven't changed much really, started taking folic acid 4 weeks before coming off the pill is about it. DH and I go to the gym a couple of times a week and eat fairly well, no smoking and I don't drink all that often.

After reading the whole list of foods I won't be able to eat when pregnant I'm not going to worry too much about changing things at this point. After all ttc could take a while!

buddhabee · 28/01/2014 12:09

yeh that's what i thought - if it takes 2 years then i think i will get more and more narked if i'm not pregnant and have changed everything.

went out and bought the pregnicare thing as it looks as though it has a lot more in it other than the folic acid and vit d i was taking, worth a punt!

how long have you all been ttc, i stopped taking the pill in dec and my cycles went back to norm asap but i'd say probably last month was our proper full month of trying!

I started running to increase fitness levels, but that was more to do with being stronger in a pregnancy than it helping me to conceive if you see what I mean.
Have cut out a few cups of coffee a day.
Booze - I can leave it pretty much if I'm around the house in the evenings, but I'm not going to stop going out and get wasted every now and then.
I think the pregnacare stuff is a rip off by pharmaceutical companies making money out of the ttc market.
Boots own brand folic is all you need in my opinion.
Healthy body and mind is the most important thing and a loving DP.
Good luck. Hope it happens quickly for you. At least you'll have the stamina when it comes to the bedroom :)
