Acupuncture

Hi ladies, just a quick question regarding acupuncture. I have never had it done for anything but have heard amazing things with regards to aches and pains so hopefully it will help with fertility and am considering giving it a go this month.
My question is do you have to get it at a certain point in your cycle for it to be useful? And has it helped anyone conceive?
Thanks.

Hi lucyjojo, I had an acupuncture session after a MMC to help get my body back to a normal cycle.
It seemed to work as I got a normal period band on 5 weeks after (normal cycle can take up to 8 weeks to return).
Another friend who had been having trouble conceiving swears by her acupuncturist, and she's now 10 weeks pregnant!
IVF heard good things all round and I think at least for your first appointment you don't need to go at any particular point in your cycle as that tends to be a consultation.
It's definitiey something I'll go back to when I save some money!
Best of luck with getting your BFP! X

Thanks for your reply sizethree! Positive news all round then! Some of the places I've been looking at do a consultation for free anyway so it's probably worth looking into. Good luck to you too, I'll let you know how I get on!

I used acupuncture for conception, she did it a couple of days before expected ovulation and a couple of days after. Got a bfp the first month with acupuncture after 11 pervious bfns.

Just saying.... Wink

It depends on what your problem is from a Chinese medicine perspective when treatment will be beneficial.

But e.g. ovulation problems, the first half of the cycle. Implantation problems, the second half of the cycle. Plus all sorts of other things.

BumpNGrind · 25/01/2014 00:51

I really want to give this ago if this cycle doesn't end in a bfp. Would anyone mind sharing what kind of costs they paid and when you think would be the ideal time for the consultation appointment please?

I have my first consultation a week on Monday, I'm paying £52 for that and £40 per session after. Smile

I am going for weekly acupuncture since beginning of November last year. Consultation was free, £35 every session after that. I have problems conceiving and all sorts of other health problems. It helps me in a way just knowing that I am actively doing something even if in the end it doesn't lead to a BFP. So far I could reduce my thyroid medication already which is good Smile. Took me a while to actually go and try it as I am usually quite scared of needles LOL

I've been trying to conceive for 6 months following a mmc in July. I started acupuncture a month ago as I was quite stressed about ttc and had heard positive things about it. I had a session at ovulation and implantation. I got a bfp yesterday! I have felt calmer since my sessions a bit more at peace about the the due date of the baby I lost in July. It was due this weekend! I am going to continue with monthly sessions throughout pregnancy if everything goes to plan. Who knows?! It was £65 first session and £40 there after. Pricey but she is a fertility acupuncturist. Go for it, you have nothing to lose.

I had acupuncture throughout my IVF and first trimester. I really feel it helped me as I had a poor response to the IVF drugs. I had only 3 follicles for egg collection and was advised to abandon the cycle and start again. I refused and proceeded, all three follicles contained an egg, two turned into embryos that were top grade, two were put back, two stuck and now I have two very healthy babies. So with such low odds I feel the acupuncture played a part.

Also I had a very good pregnancy with minimal complaint, no nausea or anything, with twins! So feel the acupuncture prevented that too.

I had acupuncture last week and it wasn't a great experience to be honest. The consultation was meant to be free but it cost £35 as it went on longer than 15 mins and the doctor made me feel so uncomfortable too. Not sure if it was a language barrier but he was really huffy and then told me not to move a muscle as the needles were in my muscles and would move the needle. So I tried to sit still which made me more nervous! Decided to give is a miss but might try someone else.

I had it at day 5 of the cycle, now on day 14 so will need to wait and see how it goes.

LucyJoJo · 26/01/2014 19:05

Oh sorry you had a bad experience Butler, how horrible for him to be mean towards you! Hope it helps you get your bfp if nothing else.
Positive news from everyone else though! I think helping to make me feel calmer would be a huge benefit, I have become so stressed about ttc recently, and my cycles are becoming more irregular, whether that's as a result of the stress who knows. I am still undecided whether or not I will go for it, I might see if I can book somewhere where the first consultation is free and see what they see. I am also booking a Dr app this month, so maybe I will wait and see what they say first.
My only problem is DH doesn't really agree with acupuncture, he thinks it will all be a waste of money and will only serve to get my hopes up unnecessarily Hmm

Positive responses to acupuncture can tend to be over-represented on forums so I'll add my experience. After almost 2 years ttc I had acupuncture for a 3 month period. In the end I had to stop as my cycle went haywire - spotting up to 7 days before cd1; no decrease in my ovulation pains and no bfp! The spotting problems stopped as soon as I stopped the acupuncture. For me, it did no good (and had a negative effect on my bank balance).

Rober21, I know this thread is about acupuncture but I just have to say it is reassuring to hear your IVF story. I am a poor responder, but I have been doing lots of things for IVF/fertility/Egg Quality and have seen my few embryo's improve in quality over 3 IVF"s. Now trying IVF round 4 at a new clinic where they do ultrasound guided transfer and hopes this makes the difference after my IVF 3 produced a top quality embryo but then they had a trainee do the transfer and they don't use ultrasound. So thanks for your story.

I have been doing acupuncture since my first failed IVF. As I said, I have seen improved embryo quality over next two IVF"s but I can't say it was the acupuncture as I have done so many things - high protein diet, supplements, etc. So I don't know what has helped but now I'm too scared to stop as I gear up for IVF 4 as I want my embryo's to keep improving.

Quokka1 · 26/01/2014 23:54

I had one session of acupuncture in Jan 2013 and got my BFP in March 2013 after 8 years of TTC! I can't know for sure that it was the acupuncture that helped me get pregnant but it's the only thing I did differently that month out of those 8 long years. Give it a try, you never know! Good luck x
