Ovulation piss sticks do i really need to fanny on this much

I am getting impatient and curious if I am actually ovulating since stopping pill in December.

I ordered some Ovulation tests off of Amazon, do I really need to pee in a cup and then let it sit there to reach room temp and then wait for ten mins for them to "develop" and up to 40 mins to confirm a negative? I only really have a few hours in the evening, is this level of organisation really essential to use them properly? If you don't do all this are they unreliable?

I've taken a half-arsed approach to using Ov tests in previous cycles and never saw a positive. It may be that I didn't get an LH surge (crazy cycles) or it could be that I didn't use them properly and therefore wasted my money. I've ordered some more and going to try and use them properly this time. It may mean taking some kind of testing kit to work with me. Pee Pot, Pee stick, pee stick holder so that I can check the stick under my desk after the recommended 10 mins (can hardly sit in the loo for 10 mins -people will think I'm having a tremendous poo!). How do others use them while working during the day?

babyrose · 15/01/2014 11:52

I don't remember reading about leaving til they reached room temperature. I think 10 mins can give is enough time. Whenever I've used them its been a long enough time frame.

Not sure what happened there!

nichib83 · 15/01/2014 12:28

Don't bother with leaving it to get to room temp. I take mine any time after one in the afternoon. I dip it, leave it for ten mins and hey presto! It gives me a reading! You can also test twice a day (early afternoon and early evening) just to make sure you don't miss the surge but I only test once and I have had a true positive result by doing this. :)

akachan · 15/01/2014 15:31

The room temperature advice is if you've been keeping your piss in the fridge. Body temp has always been fine for me!

Shoegal30 · 15/01/2014 16:12

Can you use the IC ovulation tests as HPT too?

I'm sure I read somewhere that it can be an early indicator if you get a positive in your 2WW?

pebble82 · 15/01/2014 19:11

I don't leave mine to get to room temp either. DP doesn't know I'm using them as he's not into the knowing all about cycles/timings etc so he'd wonder either what the hell I'm doing in the bathroom for so long or what on earth a pot of pee is doing cooling on the side.

Still seem to work as get faint lines (so far) from testing cd10,11,12,13.

I haven't figured out a way to test twice a day though as work full time. Can't really take a pot into cubicle in the office and shuffle around with test strips! Anyone have any bright ideas/advice? I was using OPKs last month one a day too but never saw a positive although got ewcm on cd17 so just went by that to figure out OV.

radiatormesh · 15/01/2014 19:16

If you get a positive it tends to show up pretty damn fast, in my experience. So not sure the 10mins is needed.

However in RL I know a number of women who got pregnant during a cycle they apparently didn't ovulate (according to their OPKs), which was pretty clever of them. So they are not full-proof in any way...

You can use them as an HPT: OPKs show for both LH and HCG, but HPTs only show for HCG. So if you get a positive OPK at the end of your cycle, it's worth peeing on yet another stick. There was a fantastic website explaining all this (www.peeonastick.com) but it's down :(

rockstars12 · 15/01/2014 20:04

I came off pill in August and attempted using opks for a couple of months, but my cycles were all over the place so I took a break as I was stressing myself out thinking there was something wrong with me.

New year, new start, my cycle has settled to 24 days so figured Id see whether these things worked.
My app predicted my ovulation to be today so I started monitoring a few days ago. I have the cheaper Amazon ones and I bought a more expensive branded (convinced after last time that the cheap ones might be wrong). I used the cheaper in the lead up and yesterday the expensive one both were still negative.
Today I made sure I didn't drink fluids up to 2 hours before, went at the optimum time between 2 and 2.30pm and brought 2 of each to try this evening if required as well. For the first time I got 2 positives, so no need to let the cheap one sit after all.
Have to say I nearly cried with relief seeing the smiley face and 2 equally bold coloured lines! Shame I am working all day and wont be home til midnight.

Sleepyhoglet · 15/01/2014 20:39

I use an app called pink pad. That might be helpful. Don't bother with anything else. Ttc#1 in cycle one and period 3 days late.

cookielove · 15/01/2014 21:30

I never waited for it to get to room temp, just pee, then dip the stick! And pour away! Also I tested between 6-7 and often got a + result.

cookielove · 15/01/2014 21:31

Sleepy have you tested?

Sleepyhoglet · 15/01/2014 22:31

Tested day before AF was due and not with morning wee. Was neg unsurprisingly. Then tried to test again but dropped the bloody thing (strip like ovulation strip test) into the pot of wee so invalidated!! Am waiting till weekend to test again .

Sleepyhoglet · 15/01/2014 22:33

When I said don't bother with anything else I meant I dong bother- wasn't trying to dictate to you how to measure your fertility. Sorry if sounded that way

SadieWord · 16/01/2014 14:02

Ooh don't worry sleepy good advice about the app, I have one too!

Glad I don't have to wait for the pee sticks and my wee to reach room temp.

Good luck to everyone trying.

Currently on my first proper post pill period. Fingers crossed this will not go on for three weeks then take months to reappear [smile[

AF came Hmm

handcream · 17/01/2014 18:58

I found them useful for a few months especially at the beginning. After 3 months I realised that I was regular despite having come off the pill which I was on for years.

cookielove · 17/01/2014 22:46

Sorry to hear that sleepy
