miscarriage and low progresterone

I had a mc, I was told that it was because my progesterone levels were low.

Can that suddenly change? Or change from cycle to cycle? Or is there anything I can do about it?

What happens if I keep having MC every time I get pregnant because my progesterone is low? What is the next step?

Did they tell you that was why it happened or that it was low and you were. I had very low progesterone with my first hcg blood test but no one said to me that was why. It's one of those things I think that can be a cause or symptom or both. With me they didn't say anything about it being a future problem or even a given that it meant I would miscarry

I'm sorry about your miscarriage, Hedgehead.

My understanding is that progesterone levels are linked to failing pregnancies, but there is no real understanding yet about whether low progesterone causes the miscarriage, or whether it is a symptom of the pregnancy failing and not a cause.

I would be surprised if your doctor can be sure about this.

I am at St Thomas' in London and they told me that docs will know the answer to this question in about 3 years time as a big study is currently under way to answer the question which will be published when the study is completed.

My consultant offered me progesterone supplements this pregnancy- I am on something called 'Cyclogest 400mg' which is a brand name of a drug containing 400mg of Progesterone, you take it as a Vaginal Pessary once a day, until the end of week 12, so you could be asked to put on that.

My consultant explained giving it to me as the idea if I am having a viable pregnancy, and it turns out it does help the pregnancy to keep progesterone levels high, then there is no harm in giving the supplement.

If I am having a non-viable pregnancy then the extra progesterone will be of no benefit as the pregnancy will still fail. The downside is that in this case the progesterone might well delay the start of the inevitable miscarriage, leading to a missed miscarriage as I won't start bleeding on it.

It is my sixth pregnancy so I decided the chance of possibly helping a viable baby outweighed for me the side effect of masking a miscarriage.

I hope this was of some help. Thanks
