sperm test results - surgery won't give them over the phone, am I right to assume this means there's a problem?

as some may know we've been ttc since May of last year without success. Last week dh went for a sperm test, he's been saying all along that he thinks he's "shooting blanks" as when we were ttc for ts he had a test and gp said it was slightly low but could have been affected by other things, travel abroad etc, and that month I fell pg so it obviously wasn't that much of a problem. Anyway now we've been trying for nearly 16 months and dh had his test done last week.

Yesterday he called for the result and the receptionist said it had to be seen by a doctor so to call back today. Today he called back and receptionist said she was unable to give the result over the phone as doctor has said dh needs to see him. I've had years of dealing with this surgery and generally they only ever request someone see a doctor if there's a problem with the result. So should I assume from this that dh does have a problem with his sperm count? has anyone's dh ever been told they have to see the gp as can't give result over the phone only to be told sperm count is normal?

I know that I have to be a realist now as this result could effectively mean the end of ttc for me.

agree I wouldn't make assumptions. I had a biopsy a year or so ago and the receptionist wouldn't tell me anything - made an appointment for me to 'discuss options' with the consultant. DH and i were convinced I had cancer - he took time off , we organised child care etc walkedin and the consultant said soo great news!!!

we hadbeen convinced I had cancer

My Dp's gp rang him and gave him the results, high sperm count but mobility was average which can be an number of things.

I think it's just policy that results are not generally given over the phone, as the risk of misinterpretation is so high.

Try not to worry.

Michaelangelo · 25/07/2006 16:03

My DH's doc said the same and there was nothing really wrong with his so I think its just a policy so they can discuss any questions etc

Natty1806 · 25/07/2006 16:03

Try not to worry, any chance you can move the appointment?

Beccy1974 · 25/07/2006 16:12

really good point re doctors receptionists. i'd forgotten that some just aren't allowed to give any results at all

lanismum · 25/07/2006 16:16

i had a blood test last week, and was called by the receptionist and told to make an appointment to get the results, i was worried there was something wrong, when i got in, the dr said, oh i could have phoned you, theres no problem, im hoping the same happens for you and your dh.

DollyP · 25/07/2006 16:17

Also bear in mind that they can't be sure to whom they are speaking... could be someone else ringing for the results who is not DH. My surgery only gives out results face to face. Rings to tell you results in and invites you to make an appt to see Dr.

Not necessarily bad news - will keep fingers crossed for you both.

trace2 · 25/07/2006 16:28

was told to gp with dh, when we went they were fine, try not to worry

AttilaTheMeerkat · 25/07/2006 16:38

Not necessarily bad news but would suggest you both attend the appointment.

One semen analysis is by no means fully indicative of there being a problem. Both of you can and should be retested at the subfertility unit when you are referred there.

Natty1806 · 25/07/2006 16:40

they could even be fine and he just wants to talk about next stages etc etc.

Wannabe Are you still there?

I agree with evryone - i'm sure that kind of result has to be given by docs.
Can I just comment on the last point in your post bout being the end of ttc? My dh and I been ttc to 5 yrs with 2 pregnancies in that time (a 3 yr old dd and a miscarriage last yr). We have just had tests and 4 months of chlomid and now going straight to IVF cos sperm count was very poor (low count, only 35% 'alive' and 90% immobile - sorry if tmi).

We are not entirely sure what this all means but my point is even with dh's count we have managed 2 pregs without treatment. it can happen even with poor results.

Fingers crossed for you - sure it will be fine... don't give up...

My husband is 33 and has low(24percent) sperm count and are slow or immobile. I am 42 and my GP said my hormone levels are OK and have regular monthly cycles. What are our chances of getting pregnant and what are are options. Anyone gone through same situation ?
