Pregnant after 3 consecutive miscarriages

Hi there,

I'd really appreciate your advice on this.

As the title says, I'm pregnant after three miscarriages, the last one in August. As it was the third in a row, I've had the usual battery of tests. Most have come back normal (including the analysis of the foetus) but not all the results are in yet and my appointment with the clinic is not until the end of January. That would be too late for me as I have tended to miscarry at six weeks.

What would you do in my position? Would my GP prescribe progesterone as a precautionary measure? Should I try to expedite the appointment? Or go private? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks very much, Buggerlugs - that's very helpful. Sorry to hear about your miscarriages.

Hi, I took 75mg aspirin and 1000mg folic acid as well as maternity vits.

Turned out ok.albeit after 5 mcs

Same as you, all my tests were normal. Reoccurring mc clinic had me on all kinds of shite including daily injections. I still miscarried.

TirNaNog100 · 16/12/2013 18:50

Hi Jimijack - glad it all paid off in the end. I'll definitely ask my GP about aspirin.

Part of my problem is that it's really difficult getting my results from the clinic - really drawing blood from a turnip.

I would definitely take 75 mg of aspirin it may not be beneficial but it won't do any harm. Really hope this pregnancy goes well. Thanks

SoonToBeSix · 16/12/2013 18:52

Tbh I would take aspirin regardless of what the GP says, they are not specialists.

TirNaNog100 · 16/12/2013 18:52

Thanks SoonToBeSix x

Unless of course you have a specific medical reason that would make aspirin harmful for you.

No, I've no medical condition that would make it harmful for me.

Hi there

Have you spoken to your consultant and let him/her know. If not I would try and phone them or their secretary. People are often shy about phoning the nhs but staff really don't mind (or at least they shouldn't, and if they do its them being poor not you having done something wrong). You could double check all the results aren't back and get some advice; prob better than self-medicating. They might be able to bring the appt forward. Good luck.

I'm really sorry for your losses. Mc is very rubbish.

TirNaNog100 · 16/12/2013 19:13

Thanks Camhova.

They've told me that all the results aren't back but I don't have much faith in them - I've had to really hassle them for the results I was given and they weren't able to specify exactly which ones they're waiting for. They seemed to think I was impertinent for wanting to know the results at all, just suggesting I wait until the appointment in January, even though the miscarriage was in August.

Hello

Firstly, congratulations and good luck.

I am also pregnant after 3 miscarriages, and have completed all the testing with no conclusive reasons found.

I am taking 75 mg Asprin, took progesterone (pessaries, lovely) up to 12 weeks and am injecting with Fragmin daily. All these were recommended as they 'might help' by docs at the rmc clinic.

If I was you, I would try to get seen earlier at the rmc clinic, either via your GP or calling direct the doc you saw at the hospital (their name should be one letter following your previous visits / tests etc). Not sure if you will be able to go director not, but may be worth a try.

TirNaNog100 · 16/12/2013 19:20

CarrotCakeMuffins,

Best of luck to you too :)

I'll get my GP to try and arrange for an earlier appointment, as you suggest. I just feel time is of the essence, and would rather take something 'just in case' - at least I wouldn't feel so helpless.

High dose FA was prescribed for me.

The clinic told me that they do not know he cause of 70% of all miscarriages.
They prescribed fragmin, folic acid, aspirin as it "might" help.
I took them out desperation with the knowledge that my clotting was normal.
I still miscarried, it just look a week or two longer to happen.

freelancegirl · 17/12/2013 13:14

Sorry for your previous losses, I hope this is the one that works out for you. I was successfully treated by Mr Shehata at The Miscarriage Clinic after being recognised as having high natural killer cells - something I am guessing you haven't been tested for as it's not a common test or treatment. The protocol involves steroids however w also recommends you take the aspirin as said above and an additional 25ug of vitamin D on top of what's in your pregnancy vits. Plus take the pregnacare that comes with additional omega 3. I also threw in selenium as that's meant to be very beneficial. Make sure your thyroid is functioning ok, ideally with a TSH below 2 and if for some reason it doesn't work out this time (I hope it does!) please consider seeing Mr Shehata or someone else who will test for nk cells.

Bakingtins · 17/12/2013 13:30

I second what freelancegirl says. I had the standard tests after 3 miscarriages, nothing found, lost another perfect embryo on aspirin, folic acid, progesterone then went to see Professor Quenby in Coventry and was diagnosed with high NK cells. Currently 16 weeks on prednisolone, clexane, progesterone and folic acid for first trimester.
After 3 I'd be very loath to accept the 'unlucky' diagnosis, particularly if the embryos were tested as ok.
I'd get whatever you can of the 'can't hurt' treatments this time and cross your fingers firmly.

farfallarocks · 17/12/2013 13:43

I had a similar thing, 2 mcs in quick succession pre 6 weeks
I went to see Dr Raj Rai at St Marys and he found the problem, they do a test there that no one else does (NHS tests had come back normal)
I was on progesterone and heparin daily and have a healthy 14 month old daughter who I am eternally grateful for.
I had bleeding with her too and was convinced it was going the same way, we doubled the progesterone dose.
I would be cautious about taking aspirin if no blood clotting problems have been found as it can cause problems according to Raj Rai (he is the expert in this filed)and cause spotting etc.
Best of luck, I know its nerve wracking and bleak, the result is worth it I promise!
My next step had this protocol not worked was to go for immune testing.
