I went for my 12 week scan and seen my baby measuring 11.5 weeks all healthy and well, the the sonographer found a second sac but was unsure of why it was there or what it was she took some measurements and told me it looked like a bleed. I waited for her to bring my notes back out only to be called back into a room. She then told us we were pregnant with twins but the other only measured 7 weeks and to call my midwife for some advise. At the time I was shocked and didn't really take it in until I thought about it. Why didn't she get a second oppionion in the scan room and why didn't she look into the sac to see what was inside it. In my maternity notes she has put 2nd feat us has no hart beat ! She didn't even look. I have been told by my midwife that unless anything happens, bleeding etc, then I will have to wait until my 20 week scan to find out what has happened to twin no 2. They seem to think it will reabsorbe back into my body. Has this happened to anyone else and has the second twin grown ? I can't believe the will leave me 2 months wondering if I'm going to have twins or 1 baby, and it's strange knowing there is still a baby inside me possibly not alive. I already have 3 children but really need so advise.

It seems really off not to have let you speak to someone properly after the scan.
Realistically, it doesn't sound good for the smaller twin, does it, but waiting around in a state of uncertainty for the next 8 weeks is going to make that much worse for you.
I think I would definitely go back and ask for some more answers from your midwife, and if she can't help, speak to your GP and see if they can refer you back or whatever.
Sorry you are going through this Thanks

This has happened to me, the fact that the second sac is measuring 4 weeks behind in dates means that it is certainly not viable, and will be reabsorbed by your body. Do go back for a second opinion though if you feel uncertain from this scan, which it seems as though you are. Sorry you are going through this, it is difficult to hear.

I almost know that I will only have the 1 baby but there was still a foetus measuring 7 weeks in the sac that she didn't look at only measured. What ever the outcome I'll be happy but I was also unsure if this is how the hospital should of dealt with my case ? I would of thought I would have had a follow up scan to ensure the second sac, baby was causing no problems to the other baby. I think I will go and get a private scan before my 20 week scan.

Honestly, there will be no problem caused by the 2nd sac to your baby. If they have accurately measured the smaller sac there is nothing they can do really in terms of dealing with it. It will get reabsorbed by your body. You will see this will have happened at your 20w scan.

Sorry, meant to say, please try not to worry about it.

I have no experience of twin pregnancy but just wanted to say I think your treatment is awful Sad could you ring back and ask to speak to someone/another scan?

I had a problem with my third pregnancy and after being fobbed off by the midwife/sonographer at there being no problems later I was still not happy and managed to get a consultant scan. I really think hospitals are getting too quick these days by noy explaining things properly.

Its a massive thing to you and it matters. Good luck with your pregnancy and getting some answers Smile

It doesn't sound like you've been treated well, but a "vanishing twin" is fairly common. It happened to my best friend. The remaining twin was completely healthy. Please try not to worry too much.

Thank you for everyone's advise it's much appreciated. Lucyfluff I totally agree with the treatment you get in hospitals this being my 6th pregnancy with 3 children already I know only to well the lack of care you get in hospitals it's a lack of comunaction between departments most of the time and a lot of people not having compassion. I always feel your not really that important to maternity services until you get past 16 weeks.
This is just my personal oppionion. Thanks again for replying to my message

Yes thats very true sadly Sad and even worse for the people who are too scared to question things or want answers. Take care x
