Depends how big they get.

You can live with them and take iron
You can have the individual fibroids reduced by injections
You can have them slurped out individually.

It's only for older women with big ones that people would think about a hysterectomy.

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 05/12/2013 18:45

so still chance of conceiving post treatment?

It depends on the type of fibroids you have. I successfully conceived DS with fibroids - I didn't even know I had them until my first scan! My fibroids were outwith my uterus and attached by a stalk though. By the time I was full term, the biggest fibroid had grown to 32cm x 12 cm as they feed off oestrogen during pregnancy.

I hope all goes well when you see your GP, there are lots of treatment options available.

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 05/12/2013 19:58

Thank you. glad to hear there are treatment options.

Certainly there are. My gynae told me that with young women who still wanted children she would remove the fibroid without damaging the uterus, and/or shrink them first. If your GP is a tad clueless, get a referral to a gynae. You don't want them to get too big before they are nuked.

It depends on where they are and how big they are. I've got 3 small intramural fibroids. I've seen several fertility consultants and they have all noted them and then ignored them, saying they should have no impact on conception.

But make sure you follow it up- mine got to a size where the only option was a hysterectomy. Didn't matter to me, at my age and with all family complete, but wouldn't be great for you. Don't leave it for years- the fuckers grow.

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 05/12/2013 22:20

haha thanks for that. I will def follow it up. I suppose I panicked a bit thinking that was it but at least there are some treatments available.

Definitely not game over. But get good specialist advice on management.

I have fibroids that were discovered in the early stages of my pregnancy with dd - at the last scan it was about the size of an orange. It took about 18mo to conceive her and I don't know if that was down to the fibroid or anything else - we're starting to think about ttc #2 so I'd be interested in finding that out!

eurochick · 07/12/2013 08:19

Yes, we are 3 years into ttc and on our 4th round of IVF.

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 07/12/2013 10:40

tomato I will let you know what docs say.

aww eurochick good luck Smile

As others have said there are options. It depends on size and location - I have rubbish memory of the technical names but because mine was not affecting the wall of the uterus I was not recommended to have any treatment.
In my case I have conceived twice - it did take a while the first time and I never really got any answers about whether the fibroids were a factor in this but I conceived again easily second time and when I went for my scans the fibroids weren't even noticed until,I asked about them as in my case pregnancy had shrunk them.
