Has anyone conceived after a colposcopy and further treatment?

I've got to go to the colposcopy clinic this week after having yet another abnormal smear. We are ttc and I am worried that this may cause complications and am just looking for a bit of reassurance as I am working myself into a bit of a state!
Many thanks

hi there daisy, I too had a colposcopy. Conceived unexpectedly 2 years later (was using birth control all that time). I went on to conceive two more babies at the drop of a hat.

I've had loop diathermy after abnormal smear results and colposcopy twice and now have a beautiful baby girl. I conceived twice with no problem whatsoever (first time by accident, second time first month of trying) and although I miscarried the first time it had nothing to do with the treatment. I saw a consultant during my seond pregnancy who said that the treatment has no effect whatsoever on your ability to conceive or have a healthy pregnancy.

I've had a colposcopy and loop diathermy and conceived and carried two lovely baby girls to term.

About the only time treatment can interfere w/conception is if: a particularly deep section of tissue may have had to be removed or 'cone biopsy', in which abnormalities were detected in the endocervical canal (the part that opens up when you have a baby and lets sperm pass thru into the upper reproductive tract). Sometimes, cone biopsy can lead to scarring in the canal and this can act as a barrier to sperm.

BUT, this can also not happen and in the event that a woman needs a cone biopsy, the best person to consult w/about fertility is the consultant.

Good on you for keeping regular w/your smears!

Abnormalities are VERY easily treated w/a VERY high success rate.

expat's post remind me that I actually had a cone biopsy - don't know the difference between that and a colposcopy though.
Anyway, it didn't affect my fertility at all.

A colposcopy is a procedure in which the cervix is stained w/a vinegar solution to highlight any abnromal cells. A camera, called a colposcope, is inserted into the vagina and a practitioner has a look at the cervix. Sometimes, she may also take a biopsy of any abnormal cells she sees and send them to the lab for analysis.

If the lab report comes back suggesting treatment is necessary, there are very options. Cryo treatment involves applying a solution to the surface of hte cervix which will hopefully cause some of the layers - and hopefully the layers containing the cell abnormalities - to slough off.

Loop diathermy involves using a laser or electro-heated instrument to remove cell abnormalities.

A cone biopsy involves using a laser or electro-heated instrument to remove cell abnormalities in the endocervical canal.

I had colposcopy in between my second and third child. I know someone who conceived after cryotherapy as well.

Vaginal childbirth will also act to slough off many cell abnormalities on the cervix.

Piccalilli · 17/07/2006 09:25

Colposcopy is just the bit where they take a close look at your cervix with a camera - it's a very weird experience being able to see your own cervix! They sometimes then take a small sample of tissue (you feel a sharp pinch) to see how extensive the cell changes are. That ISN'T a cone biopsy, which they would do under anaesthetic. Loop diathermy is where they burn off the bad cells using an electrical current - also done under anaesthetic.

expatinscotland · 17/07/2006 09:26

I had my loop done under local anaesthetic in the US, and got to watch!

I was knocked out for the cone biopsy and everything took 2 months to get back to normal (no sex either - hell as dh and I had only started seeing each other recently!).
Sounds like a colposcopy is much easier. Good luck.

I had colposcopy and cone biopsy a year before ttc. Have since had 2 babies

Bad smears/cone biopsy felt like such a big/scary deal at the time. Now I just feel grateful that the screening is so efficient

Good luck at the clinic, you'll be fine

had 2 colposcopies and a loop diathermy

neither of which have any implications on future conceptions

thanks so much ladies. We are now going private (get it through dh's work so why not use it?) and it has been brought forward to this afternoon as just want to get it over with. Thanks again for all your posts.
