How painful is HSG test

I'm booked in for HSG on Friday morning, not given it much thought but when I spoke to the nurse she suggested taking pain killers beforehand.
Does anyone have any experience of a HSG and was it painful?

Mine wasn't painful, but it was uncomfortable. I had some period-like cramps afterwards and a small amount of bleeding, so yes painkillers will help.

It's not a dignified process, but definitely not a traumatic experience.

Thanks. I'm supposed to be going out that night for drinks with friends. I think I may put my apologies in now as I think I may just want to mooch around that night

I had no pain at all. was fine after and not really any bleeding to speak of although my af following it was early!

I found it to be like a longer smear, with more people in the room! nothing to worry about.

In my case the fear was worse than the actual reality.

It should not be painful at all provided the dye is injected both carefully and slowly. You should be given painkillers to take beforehand.

HSG is a useful test to have as it is a tubal x-ray and gives information not easily accessible by other methods i.e deformities INSIDE the tubes can only be seen on this type of x-ray. You should be told at the time about the state of your fallopian tubes whether they are patent (open) or not.

I would wear some sanitary protection afterwards as that dye (they use about a teaspoonful) does come out. I would stay home that evening and put your feet up.

Good luck!.

"I found it to be like a longer smear, with more people in the room! nothing to worry about."

I've used exactly these words to describe it several times.

I had no pain, but I took a couple of nurofen beforehand, just in case. I had almost no cramps afterwards, and zero fall out (although san pro is advised) - the dye shot straight through my tubes and all ended up in my abdominal cavity floating around. I think there can be some pain if there is some debris so the tube swells slightly before the debris is dislodged.

Thanks everyone, I hadn't been worried then I kind of got myself worked up! I'm sure it will just be an uncomfortable type o pain if any.

I allowed a student to do mine and it was quite uncomfortable as the speculum was rammed right up against my cervix. I didn't even feel the catheter go through the cervix. I also found it uncomfortable to keep my legs open as I get quite achy hips. I felt tender afterwards but as my pregnant boss told me its nothing compared to what's to come Grin
