V early pregnancy with a blocked fallopian tube - will it stick?

Hello all! You seem like a nice bunch and I got some useful advice here a while ago about alcohol while TTC. So maybe there are some words of wisdom for me again here?

After about 15 months of trying I was referred for investigations and the HSG scan showed a blocked left tube. I was very surprised and more than a bit gutted. I agreed with the consultant that a laparoscopy would be a good idea to see what was going on there, possibly removing the tube as apparently when they are blocked they can turn the whole environment a bit toxic (urgh). So, the laparoscopy was booked in for early December, and you can guess the rest ... my period was due about six days ago but never showed, POAS tests are positive (still a pale line, but getting darker each day I swear!) I have cancelled the laparoscopy and hoping hoping hoping that although it is early days still, it sticks. I have never had a positive test result before... Excited but not quite believing it so I won't let myself go overboard. Yet. Husband is very cautious too.

I have an appointment with the consultant next week (it was already in the diary to meet him before the lap - handy!) So I am asking for tips for things to ask him about. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

This is what I am worrying about at the moment:

  1. Am I actually, really truly, actually honestly up the duff? Finally?
  2. Google helpfully informs me that ectopic pregnancies are more likely if you have a blocked tube. Is this true and how likely is it?
  3. Can I have an early scan to see if it is in the right place and if so when is the earliest it makes sense to do this?
  4. Am I more likely to miscarry because of the blocked tube (being realistic, the risk is probably high-ish anyway as it is first pregnancy and I am 37)

So - what else do you think I should be asking him about? Or if you have any answers to those questions, please help!

Huge thanks. And best wishes to everyone who is trying and hoping.

Oh wow congratulations catnip Smile could you get a CBdigi to confirm pregnancy...it might sink in actually seeing the words and weeks?!

I have no experience of blocked fallopian tubes, Im sure someone wise will come along and help you. Re your consultant apt, write down your questions like you have here and Im sure they will put your mind to rest. I dont see any reason why it would be a higher risk of mc.

Good luck and hope you have a healthy pregnancy Smile keep us updated!!!

catnip, congrats! the time to go and verify it is intrauterine pregnancy is already at 5 weeks, but if you want to see a heartbeat too you should wait until you are 7 weeks. then even the stupidest tech ahould find it! meanwhile, watch out for the symptoms of ectopic - one sided pain, sharp stabs, and weirdly also shoulder tip pain. an ectopic is a rare thing, so not to worry at all!

CatnipMouse · 22/11/2013 21:54

Really Jass, they can tell so soon whether it is in the right place? That's amazing. Will ask the doc for an early scan if possible! Thank you. Shoulders are fine so far-that is a very strange thing to learn, I wonder why that happens!!

Thank you Lucy, I have to go into town tomorrow so I will look out for a clear blue test, that's a great idea!

Just been out for a celebratory curry and ordered an alcohol free lager to go with it. It was revolting.

Congratulations, catnip!

Ectopic pregnancies are quite rare (have a look at ectopic pregnancy trust website) but if you have any pain, bleeding or upset stomach please get yourself checked out straight away (a&e). The shoulder pain isn't always present - I've had two ectopics and didn't have it either time.

Hoping everything is where it should be and that you have a trouble free pregnancy!

CatnipMouse · 23/11/2013 16:01

Fizzy feet, you had two ectopic pregnancies? That is very bad luck, I am sorry to hear that. Thank you for the advice.

Blocked tube here! Also the mother of a 2.5 year old girl!.

I have one tube completely blocked and the other is scarred and not great.
I got my bfp just after my lap op. I was so shocked I couldn't believe it.
My consultant did a scan at 6 weeks just to be sure everything was where it should be and it was.....yay!

Congratulations Grin

CatnipMouse · 24/11/2013 20:28

Thanks Gaggiagirl, that's really good to hear. Looking forward to Tuesday and a chat with the doc. Then on Tuesday evening I am meeting up with my mum and dad for dinner and I am really excited about telling them ... I know it's a bit early but I want their support if it doesn't work out. Plus they'll definitely work it out anyway if I am not drinking wine!!

Well, it didn't stick, after all that. Been bleeding since Sunday afternoon and now just waiting for a second blood test to confirm fallen hcg levels and therefore m/c. Bollocks and fuck.

On a positive note - it is much better to lose it at 6 weeks than later on, and it is not as painful or awful as I thought it might be. The EPU were nice to me even though I had to wait a long time. And at least I know that I did get pregnant, so now that it has happened once I am a lot more confident that it WILL happen again (getting pregnant, not m/c, obviously I am hoping that m/c doesn't happen again...)

Got to go back to the EPU tomorrow for a second blood test and then as soon as I get the results I am expecting, I am going to find a really lovely bottle of red wine and drink the bloody lot. Thank you everyone for your comments above x
