Ovulation between cycle day 21 and day 28...when would my period be due ?

So iv'e been trying to conceive for 15 months without success, i'm 38. For a while now i have been having irregular periods and have had a few day 21 blood tests which have always shown that i haven't ovulated. anyway, this cycle i had my day 21 test which showed that as usual i haven't ovulated. My doctor advised me to have it repeated on day 28. My period didn't arrive on day 28, which was Monday. When i phoned for my results i was surprised to be told that i have indeed ovulated and that my progesterone was at a good level. I must have ovulated somewhere between days 21 and 28 so when would my period be likely to arrive ? I am getting very anxious as i have a n appointment in just under 2 weeks time at the infertility clinic where the nurse was possibly going to start me on Clomid and the reason for my panic is that i am meant to be having an HSG to check my tubes are not blocked. That can't be done until cycle day 5 but my period still isn't here so the test is getting delayed! I need to have the HSG before my clinic appointment as i'm worried that the clinic will not want to see me until the HSG has been done and then i may have to wait another 4 months to be seen. It's so tricky to plan as my cycles are irregular. Help!

I'm no expert and I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon but here goes -
It depends how long your usual Luteal Phase is. For example I know through ov testing that my usual LP is for 14 or 15 days so no matter when I ov in my cycle I just add on the 14/15 days to know when my period will arrive.
Hope that makes sense.

P.s - have you tried vitamin B6 (pyridoxine sp?) to regulate your periods?

What was your progesterone level; ideally it should be around 30.

Do you actually have a diagnosis of the underlying problem, I'd be aiming for that first off.

Irregular periods are often caused by hormonal imbalances; in this regard a condition called polycystic ovaries is a common culprit. Another possible reason is problems with the thyroid gland. Both of these can and should be looked for via blood tests. Both are a cause of irregular periods.

Why do you need to have the HSG done before your appointment at the clinic?. I ask this as HSG is not normally done first off, this is usually done later in the treatment plan.

Also your man should be tested in tandem with your own investigations.

The HSG I think does not have to be absolutely done on cycle day 5; as your cycles are irregular anyway all the blood tests etc should be done according to calendar days.

I don't know what my progesterone level was, i did ask but the doctor just said it was a good level and that was that. My husband had his sperm tested months ago and results were all clear so nothing wrong with him. the nurse at the infertility clinic did a scan at my last appointment back in August which revealed that i had 3 ovarian cysts, although i'm not sure i have polycystic ovaries. she said my irregular periods were likely caused by a hormonal imbalance. My doctor said it's possible that i could be entering perimenopause even though i'm 'only' 38! I bloody hope not!! I suppose they want to do the HSG on day 5 of the cycle to ensure that there is no chance of pregnancy. I guess the hospital worry in case they get sued if they were to destroy a pregnancy. I tried Vitamin B6 for a few months but sadly it did nothing to regulate my cycles. My thyroid has been checked and is functioning normally. I have had a blood test ot check my FSH level on day 3 of my cycle and recently it came back at 11.2 which the nurse said was reasonable. Fsh on day 3 is a good indicator of ovarian reserve, the lower the number the better. Obviously i have some eggs left, i just hope they are of good quality to be able to be fertilised. Really scared that i might be in perimenopause as i haven't completed my family yet. I was always highly fertile in the past and ovulated regularly. I just hope my age hasn't caught up with me yet.

In answer to your original question regarding when you might expect your period: with the test regarding progesterone and ovulation, it would be usual to get tested between 6 and 9 days post ovulation to ensure a level that indicates that you have ovulated. Outside of these days it is more likely to end up with a result that shows you have not ovulated (exception being past 9 dpo if pregnant)

So assuming that on day 28 when you got the test done you were between 6 and 9 days post ovulation, and assuming you have a regular 14 day luteal phase (this is a huge assumption obviously!), then your period would be expected somewhere between 5 and 8 days later, thus between days 32 and 36 at some point. But as I say this is assuming many things that may not be true for you.

Since today would be cycle day 33 for you, then I would say that your period should arrive within the next 3 days. Which I hope will give you some time to sort out the HSG on cycle day 5, before your fertility appointment. I hope it all works out for you.

But you are not "late" until Wednesday, I know it is difficult but try to distract yourself til then! What happens with booking your hsg, are they waiting til you reach cycle day 1?

whoops I just noticed I was a week late posting!!!! did your period finally arrive and did you get your hsg done?
