HSG test: general advice needed please

Will try to keep this brief.

I have been TTC #1 for 13 months. Have had blood test which shows I ovulate and DH has had semen test which is normal. Also I have regular periods.

I've been referred to my local hospital and had my appointment with gynecologist this morning.

She had said that as on the face of it both my and hubby's tests have come back clear the next test is a HSG test.

The only prob is that it can take up to 7/8 months before I wt the appointment.

I am considering going private (will make sacrifices elsewhere).

Has anybody got any recommendations? I've read other stories of people conceiving very soon after as it clears out the system?

Any advice appreciated x

Hi shoegal. We have been ttc for 12 months. I had the hsg in July and a laparoscopy at the same time. Did your consultant say why it would take so long to have the test? I first saw the consultant in June & as I said I had the lap&dye in July.

I would have a look at the NICE (national institute of clinical excellence ) guidelines as 7-8 months seems like an awfully long time to wait.

I have heard that chances of conception are higher for 3 months after hsg although I haven't had my bfp yet!

Hope this helps

That seems like a long wait.

Unless you are pushing menopause, I personally would keep the money for later. If you do end up needing fertility treatment, it gets very expensive, very quickly.

Have you ever had any pelvic infection or anything else which leads you to think you could have blocked tubes? If so might be worth trying to skip the queue, as otherwise you could have virtually zero chance of conceiving. but if not, chances are it probably won't find anything. I had a hycosy (v similar to HSG) in Aug- took 3 months to get an appointment- they only had 4 slots a week at my hospital (!) and you had to call on the first day of your period and get it done in a narrow window of your cycle. For me didn't find any blockages or debris to clear out so no surge of fertility afterwards! I can check our clinic's price list to see how much they charge for a HSG if you were interested.

I had a hsg, it only took a few weeks for the appointment to come through on nhs

it was clear. I didnt concieve after it (10 months later got a bfp!) so dont get your hopes up too much based on that!

Hi, just if you are interested in a ballpark figure a HyCoSy at the clinic we're hoping to have IVF at (Surrey) costs £450.

Thanks for the advice all.

I haven't had any pelvic problems fortunately so won't get pushed up the list.

I was surprised by the wait too but was told that is the wait at the hospital!

I did mention that I might go private and the nurse told me I would still have to wait until we have been TTC for 24 months until we are eligible for IVF so I might as well wait the 7 months as I may get pregnant naturally. I just don't want to spend another 7 months and then find out I may have an issue.

I think my local private clinic will cost around £400 too.

I can see what the nurse meant and you may well get pregnant naturally but like you say, 7 months is a long time to wait if you then find out that theres a blockage or another problem.

I suppose it's something that you and your partner will have to discuss and weigh up the best option for you. Good luck!
