Fertility test results

Hi :) New here waves am hoping someone can help me with some questions i have please...

Currently seeing a fertility specialist, 2nd appointment a few days ago to get blood test results, which is what i want to ask about,

My progesterone (blood test was done 8dpo well according to cbfm) came back as 33.8 nmol/l does that mean i ovulated that month? I ask this as from my FSH/LH results she thinks i might have pcos and has done a retest to see if same results. Also my prolactin level came back as 1435 mIU/l (again she has done a retest) report says its mostly monomeric prolactin?

Can anyone shine some light on what i might expect if the tests come back basically the same?

Hi, i had a progesterone test done 2 months ago now and my level came back as 28. My doctor said they like it to be 30 at a minimum but as i am regular etc he seems to think i ovulated.

However, i went to see a chinese lady who helps with fertility using accupuncture and herbs and straight away when i said 28 she said ok yes thats too low, apparently i had ovulated but the level of hormone was either too low to conceive or too low to implant? I would say yours is high enough though :-)

How long have you been trying to conceive? I am about to book my fertility appointment, just to check nothing else is wrong.

If you don't have PCOS, it would suggest that you ovulated, but apparently if you have PCOS, it can skew the results and you can get a 'good' reading even if you didn't ovulate. I can't remember why though, sorry - hopefully someone who knows will be along shortly!

PCOS won't screw the progesterone result, just increase the level of LH (usually measure with FSH at day 2).

It sounds like you have ovulated. PCOS doesn't anyways stop it. I've had PCOS for years but I ovulate every month without fail. Like most medical issues there are lighter and stronger cases and people have different symtpoms. As it looks like you are ovulating even if you do have PCOS, it should not have any effect on conception.

Hi thanks for replying :)

Ive been ttcing for prob the best part of 5-6 years with my husband and its only recently that ive been to my gp (this is because years ago, when i was with an ex and we were ttc, i asked for help, i was basically fobbed off, they just took blood, didnt tell me what it was for or what they checked, i was told to phone for results and when i did they said everything was normal, asked if i should make another appointment and was told no, so being me and not wanting to make a fuss, i didnt push it any further. So now being older and more pushy ;) i went again and saw a diff doctor who made me an appointment with a fertility specialist, as i said ive had 2 appointments, and 3rd is in a few weeks for 2nd test results, they did have my 2nd appointment booked for nov (think im waiting that long!) but ive managed to get a cancellation and again phoning for the 3rd appointment, i got it a month earlier than the dr suggested, some ppl might think im being too pushy, but at the end of the day if something is stopping me getting pregnant then i want results and something to help, and i think ive waited long enough for something to be done!

With regards to the pcos i do have regular periods, every month, the reason i ask about the pcos and ovulating is i wonder what they might give me if i have pcos but ovulate? She did mention clomid but i thought that was for people who dont ovulate? And im sure the results she said meant i did ovulate :s

If you are ovulating (and the test result indicates that you are) clomid won't help. There is something other than egg laying at play. The obvious things to check next are you tubes (blocked?) and your partners' swimmers.

About a third of couples experiencing infertility are "unexplained" - there is no obvious cause - the woman ovulates, the swimmers are fine, the tubes are clear so they should be able to reach one another, but it just doesn't happen. But with only one blood test, it is too early to know whether you will end up in this category.

Hi Eurochick :) Husband has been checked and he is fine, nothing wrong in that department ;) Specialist mentioned a check on my pituary (sp) glands if the results were the same (im not sure if this is another blood test?) No mention as yet of checking tubes but as you say its early days yet, im just too impatient and want all the results now lol!

The prolactin looks too high. I think I was told anything over 1000 was too high and increased prolactin can be a cause of infertility so investigating and treating that if still high sounds wise. And hopefully that is all the problem is, well worth a hope!

I guess that the pituitary reference is to hormone levels. I've had all the investigations and been through 3 rounds of IVF and my pituitary has never been mentioned in terms, although my hormone levels have been checked.

I reckon the next step for you will be a HSG to check you tubes.
