I am surprised I have reached the age of 33 without knowing some basic human biology but here goes, thanks for your help.

We recently got married, we already have an 18 month old (happy mistake so never had to go through all this previously). We were going to wait until Christmas to TTC but I’ve persuaded OH to try now so I immediately came off the pill and had a bleed a few days later as per normal. I’d been taking the pill for two weeks (been on since six week check so about 16 months) when I took my last pill instead of the usual three weeks.

So knowing what I know now, and what I don’t know, I guess I ovulated around a week before I took my last pill (two weeks since my last period). Does this mean that I’ll then ovulate four weeks after that (based on a 28day cycle)? Or will it be two weeks after my bleed? There is a difference of a week which affects everything really based on the dates we have DTD.

Having only just come off the pill, I am not back into a normal cycle yet so it may be hard to tell.

I’m also unsure of the differences between ovulation symptoms and implantation symptoms as everything I have read makes them sound so similar. I had some symptoms around a week ago which would be ovulation symptoms if based on two weeks since my bleed or implantation if based on previous ovulation.

I hope this is making sense!

I used to have a 30 day cycle when not on the pill which would mean AF is due the 25th (eight days to go).

What do you think?

Hi,

The pill stops ovulation, so you won't have ovulated before you stopped taking it.

If you were to have a textbook 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14, and if that cycle came back straight away, you would have ovulated 14 days after you period started. There are a lot of "ifs" in there though! It can take a while for your cycles to settle down after the pill and you might not got back to the 30 day cycle you had before.

Thanks for that, it's all getting a bit clearer now.

I'm assuming that i ovulated on Tuesday as I had some pains in my abdomen that were completly different to normal period pains. If i haven't ovulated in so long because of the pill then this is why it probably hurt. I've also had tingly boobs.

We DTD on Saturday prior so if i understand correctly sperm can live in you for up to 72 hours maybe there is a slight chance i could be pregnant?

I realise i'm clutching at straws, just a little excited!

There's a 25 per cent chance of a healthy couple conceiving each month but of course you need to dtd at the rights time. The beat way to find out when you're ovulating is to chart basal temp, use opks and check things like cervical mucus and cervical position.
