What to say to the doctor - first visit

Been a while since I started a thread!

So we are about to start our 12th month of TTC and I think it is about time to visit the doctor and see if there is a problem. I can't see any obvious reason to not be successful - I was never on the pill, cycles are relatively regular, we are both fit and healthy but I've not even had a sniff of a line in that time. Obviously I hope there isn't a problem but I would rather know in case we are fighting with something we don't even know about.

Probably is, I don't really know what to say. I don't really go to the doctors usually so don't really have a relationship with her but when I have been I have found her a bit negative sometimes. I want her to take me seriously and at least offer to test in some way but I am not sure what to say to make sure that happens. Do you think it is better to take DH? He is willing to go but not sure if it would help or not?

Anyone that has been to docs after struggling with TTC - what did you say?

Just make an appointment - go in and say "we have been ttc for12 months, nothing has happened, I would like to start investigations to find out why". Go with details of your last few menstrual cycles, how often you are having sex, any other relevant medical info. They will probably send you for tests first, then your partner.

Thank you! I just made the appointment, they had a gap today. Going to write out my cycles from the app for last few months to show we have tried.

Any opinions on taking DH?

I just told the dr how long we had been trying and that it wasn't working. He wasn't interested in details about my cycles or how often we were dtd.

I was referred for:
Day 2-5 blood test to check LH and FSH
Day 21 blood test to check progesterone levels (to confirm ovulation)

These two are the standard first line tests for women. My GP also threw in a list of general blood tests at the same time.

My husband was told to go in to get a referral for an SA.

Both our tests came back normal, so the GP referred us on to the fertility clinic for further investigations.

Thanks eurochick, that's pretty much exactly what happened. She was really understanding actually and sent us away with several bits of paperwork for blood tests and a pot for DH sperm analysis.

Bit overwhelming for him I think, she freely used the words menstral, mucus and bleed more than he is comfortable with, but I am glad I took him. Meant he could hear what the plan was from a medical professional and get the ball rolling for both of us.
