Exercise when TTC?

Hi I just wondered whether anyone has any advice on exercise? I haven't had my period yet and have stopped doing my Jillian Michaels DVD (was only 2/3 times per week) as was worried this could be too stressful for my body but am now putting on weight and feeling even more depressed as no AF and now fatter thighs/more unfit! Any advice on what is too much or what is good to continue?

The NHS advice is basically not to take up anything new when pregnant. I've never seen any specific advice for ttc and have exercised throughout.

Have you done a pregnancy test? You are off the pill and putting on weight....

Yes I have done a few :( sadly am not, the extra weight is probably a result of too much ice cream in consolation lol!

It took me until about September to have a period after coming off Yasmin about May last year. I took up running (fairly gently) over the same time, and it definitely didn't cause a problem - I'm 35 weeks pregnant now.

You can definitely exercise - as long as you're not getting very thin, then I think exercise is a very good thing for you overall.

Good luck!

Watching with interest, no advice, just hoping someone will come along and tell you what's good to do. I did a yoga dvd last time for preg women, although it seemed more focused on the last trimester and getting ready for labour. All that seems too far off at the mo for me!

I have no idea how true this is but it made sense to me...
I read somewhere you can carry on as usual up to ovulation, then take it easier (low impact etc) during the 2 week wait when, if you've conceived, the blood flow should be focused on your womb rather than diverted to muscles.
I would defo take advantage of trying to get as fit as possible before you get your BFP though as the instant we conceived my boobs went huge & sore & all my energy got sucked away! I feel massive already!
Good luck!

Hi, not sure if it will help but saw a blog about exercising during pregnancy is supposed to help reduce the chance of a caesarean birth so I'm thinking that it must be a good thing, blogs.prideangel.com/post/2013/07/Exercise-during-pregnancy-reduces-risk-of-a-Caesarean-birth.aspx There was also a post on the forum on the same site about exercising when trying to conceive so have put the link to that too forum.prideangel.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=447 Seems like its a big thumbs up. Hope this helps, good luck xx

Well, I had mc early in July. Since then, haven't felt like doing any exercise (and couldn't go swimming,...has taken absolute ages to sort itself out). I'm chubby,...and I don't like it, so something has to be done about it. I guess as long as you don't overdo it, it should be fine to exercise. It's not as if everyone, who gets pregnant immediately stops all activity in their daily life.

I am on holiday, so the plan for next week is:

  • going to water aerobics/swimming on three days
  • doing normal aerobics on one day
  • doing pilates on one day
  • going cycling with DH whenever there's time

I'll try and keep up the pilates and perhaps two water stuff/swimming sessions per week after the holidays as well. In addition, I'm trying to get back into tennis and currently trying to book a lesson per week (because I'm so rubbish, it makes you want to weep). It's all comparatively low-impact stuff, but I'm hoping that it will get me a bit fitter before the next pregnancy.

The one thing I am still shying back from is rugby. I'd love to get back to it,...but it just doesn't seem like a good choice when ttc. Grin

I'm ttc and I've just delayed my ovulation by exercising too hard this week. At least, I'm 95% sure that's what caused it - certainly very unlikely to be anything else. Mind, I work out VERY hard and overdid it a bit on two days this week. I've conceived twice whilst exercising hard though, so I don't think it's a problem IF it's what you normally do - it's upping the ante that mayh cause you a problem.

I've read that you should avoid heavy work out, though relaxing, not strenuous exercise are recommended, e.g. yoga and pilates. It's important to be helathy when you ttc and sport is the best way to stay fit:)

I gave up some of my more risky forms of exercise (climbing, mountain biking) when I started TTC 2 years ago and I didn't replace it with anything. I was also comfort eating because I felt like I was failing when I got my period every month and found I had put on 2 stone by March this year. I am now losing it again and am at me pre TTC weight which is so important as if I was very heavy I would not have got my referral to the fertility clinic. I am walking a lot and gave up my car to ensure I am more active. I hope to be as healthy as possible for when it's finally "my turn".
So my advice would be to stay active to feel good about yourself and the healthiest you can be for carrying and delivering your little one but don't take on anything new that's too strenuous. Good luck Xx
