Confused over ovulation

I'm not the cleverest person in the world with ovulation so I need your help
My last period was from 3-8 August, so I checked mumsnet ovulation calendar and it said my fertile days were from 15-20 August. However I had no ewcm last week. I've just been to the toilet and noticed I have a lot of ewcm so does that mean I've ovulated past my fertile period, also if I'm not pregnant A.F is due next Sat and surely I can't be ovulating a week before my period or could I be. xx

Sounds like you've ovulated late to me - so expect your period 'late' too.

internationallove985 · 24/08/2013 21:12

Well you learn something everyday when ttc. I honestly didn't know that late ovulation could also mean a late period, as stressful as this ttc, sometimes is it's certainly very fascinating isn't it. I have D.T.D 7 times since yesterday which seems like the day prior to ovulation so here's hoping my late period will mean a B.F.P and not because of late ovulation xxx

Quick!! DTD! Ewcm is a sign you're about to ov, so you still have time to get a couple in before you're out for the month Grin

internationallove985 · 24/08/2013 21:37

Wish I could wispaxmas, but I'm the one with the scheduled sex life due to him not living with me and our working hours being out of sync. (sad face) Well if last my last D.T.D (refer to my post at 21.12) hasn't worked it looks like I'm out as I'm not seeing him till Wed or could I still be in my ovulation period by then.
However there's still hope as it is very possible to concieve before ovulation. I've also heard that if you do concieve prior to ovulation it will be a girl, so if I have concieved it looks like I could be blessed with another daughter, xx

How can you conceive before the egg is released??

internationallove985 · 24/08/2013 22:53

Well sperm lives in your body for about 5 days doesn't it, so if I am ovulating then the sperm will still be inside me. Ready to fertilize my egg. xx

You mean if you have sex prior to ovulation.

VJONES1985 · 24/08/2013 22:59

I see. The sex of the baby is determined by the individual sperm that fertilises the egg. So it all depends on which one is strongest and fastest :)

internationallove985 · 24/08/2013 23:52

Hi Winkywinola in answer to your question yes, also I've not came across you so if you're a newbie to mumsmet, welcome.
Hi VJONES. I know male sperm swims quicker but dies before female sperm where as female sperm is the opposite it swims slower but lives longer than male sperm xxx

Hi there,

Just having a nosey on the board this morning and came across your post.

Everyone's body works differently EWCM (or Jelly Beans as it's called in our house!!! Husband felt it was TMI!) is a great sign that you're ovulating but for some women it's not.

Stay positive - you're spot on that female sperm live longer and it's possible to conceive 3-5 days after dtd.

Fingers crossed that AF doesn't visit next week

x

Hi, not sure if it will help but I read a post on another forum from a natural fertility expert on how to tell when you are fertile. It talks about recognising your bodies signs leading up too and during fertility, it may be worth a read and may help you figure out what's going on. forum.prideangel.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=537

Hi Wrighty . Thankyou for your reply. Will have to check that out. xxx

I would be careful using ovulation calculators etc as these use average cycles and are not specific to your cycle.
An average cycle explanation;
The cycle starts (day 1) with the first day of your period. On around day 14 of the cycle you ovulate. Your fertile period is approximately the 4 days before and the day of ovulation. The time between the day of ovulation and the day your next period arrives is called your luteal phase, in an average cycle this is 14 days long. Therefore in this average cycle example your period starts on day 1, you ovulate on day 14, you have a 14 day luteal phase (days 15 to 28) and then your period starts again on day 1 (which is day 29 iykwim). You would be fertile approx between days 10 and 14.
Your cycle might be different to the average cycle - you may ovulate before or after day 14 in your cycle. If you ovulate earlier or later than day 14 then your fertile period will move accordingly. Also your luteal phase may be longer or shorter than 14 days.

VJONES1985 · 26/08/2013 12:17

Yeah, likewise, according to opks and other signs,I ovulated cd 17-19 this month and I'm only guessing that my luteal phase is 14 days but it may not be.

justb01 · 26/08/2013 12:23

I guess to determine O correctly temping is necessary. When you see a drop of temp and a rise the day after you'll know you've had just ovulated. Unfortunately, not many people have 14 days cycles :/

WinkyWinkola · 26/08/2013 13:31

But is the luteal phase straight after you ovulate? Or after that released egg 'dies'?

How long does an egg survive for?

CatsCantFlyFast · 26/08/2013 13:48

The luteal phase begins the day after
Ovulation occurs. An egg can live for 12 to 24 hours approx after ovulation
