I am 40 (will be 41 in October) & my decided to try for a baby with my new DP now that we are settled in our house together. I was in two minds about it due to my age (hence my new nickname!) but feel I would regret not giving it a go.

I have now been trying for over 3 months without success and am already getting frustrated & feeling it won't happen as I have left it too late. I fell pregnant with my boys (11 & 14 years back) without even trying but I know it takes longer (if it happens at all) once you are past 40. If you managed to conceive after 40, how long did it take before you got that positive test?

Sorry for typos in first line. My boys were hassling me as I was typing this out!

In the fourth month both times at 42 and 45. Good luck.

Gowaygoway · 08/08/2013 19:46

Second month for me. I used a Persona ovulation monitor and it's worked for me 3 times. Good luck!

I got pregnant first month of trying with DS1 when I was 38. I'm now 43 and it's been 3 years of constant shagging and negative tests Sad, but we're all different. Good luck!

Hi 2minds, I met my dp(now darling husband) in October, I got the BFP in February. I was 42. It was a total shock, so I can only use those 3 months as a template. I had a ds and a dd long before my third baby came along..
Best wishes for a quick BFP!

MrsWooster · 08/08/2013 19:49

Oh, also used Clear Blue electronic ovulamatron thing to target-shag and check I was still ovulating.

That's good to hear, MrsWooster.Smile Just had my third failed cycle & despite being determined at the start that I would take a laid back attitude to it all, it is already starting to worry me that it won't happen.

Hi I have a clearblue fertility monitor, I got my bfp the first month I used it . Was planning on selling it on eBay but if you would like to buy it pm me. It would be £40 with box and instructions.

PearlyWhites · 08/08/2013 20:03

Forgot to say I hope you get your bfp soon three months isn't anytime really so try not to worry also you have proven fertility.

Secretswitch · 08/08/2013 20:10

2minds, three months is definetly not long..it is discouraging though when you want to have a baby! I can also say OPK worked very well for me. Conceived dc 1 and 2 within a month of using these wonders of science :)

2minds · 08/08/2013 23:26

Is that like the Persona monitor, PearlyWhites? I have never used any kind of opk before but maybe I should think about trying something like that.

When I announced I had my period this week, DP said "another one?!" This made me feel that he was surprised we hadn't managed to conceive yet, but it could just be me being paranoid. It can all get pretty frustrating, can't it?!

Which OPK did you use, Secretswitch? I had been trying to workout possible ovulation dates myself based on my cycle but I guess I could be getting it wrong.

I cannot remember exactly, as my oldest child is 16 now! I bought mine off the shelf. They were the POAS kind. If you were ovulating a second line appeared on the test ( like many pregnancy tests ) You were meant to start testing about nine days after your period began, and continue testing until a positive result occurred.
I'm guessing the most recent kits are meant to be used over and over...

Secretswitch · 09/08/2013 10:43

I also wanted to tell you my freind's mum had her sister at the age of 50!
This was in 1965 and was a complete shock. Mother nature is tricky old girl..

2minds · 09/08/2013 11:25

Wow, a natural conception at 50! That must have been a shock for her!

I think I may look into buying some kind of opk for this month. Will look them up online.

I had an unplanned pregnancy at 37 with DP but this ended in a MMC. Timing was not right to try again straight after as we were not yet living together and trying to get DP's house sold. We are now settled in a house together and ready to try again but fear we have left it too late so it is good to read of others stories of success.Smile
