Hi everyone, I've been going out of my mind the past few days with worry so just decided I would post here to try to get some advice off any women who have been through situation as me.
I had a d&c on 29th April due to our baby having cystic hygroma at 13 weeks and docs spraying there was only 12 % chance of survival for the bab.
I went back onto my pill 2 weeks after d&c but had no period in between packs (microgynon) and have since finished 2 packs and had no period at all, just browny reddy discharge (sorry!)
I went to my gp and she suggested to come off pill completely which I have done and still had no period and that was three weeks ago. I have had Blood test and my hormones are normal and pregnancy test is negative.
Gp has referred me for an ultra sound scan/testing but I am worried that there are severe scras or adhesions in my uterus form d&c and that it why the blood cannot escape, as I have been informed that this is a condition called ashermans syndrome where the blood cannot escape due to thick scarring and so is re absorbed back into Fallopian tubes and can ultimately leave you infertile.? After everything I've been through I just want to try again and I am absolutely terrified I have got this thing and I am going to be left infertile.
Does anyone have any similar expertise and would anyone say I should be panicking if not having bleed after the two packs of pill?
I am finding it so hard to sleep or get on with things with this hanging over me, and to make it worse i have had pains on and off for past week in pelvis area. Doctor has made referral as an urgent one.
Please help, Amy xx

Hi Amy. I did not have a d&c, but I stopped the pill after taking 2 or 3 strips in a row and it took a while for my hormones to get back to normal. At first my body was gearing up for ovulation, but the lh surge just wasn't strong enough for ovulation. But after three months I finally ovulated.

It's good the GP is checking out if there's something else going on. And what hormones did they test? I think even if the blood test shows nothing, then you could still have what I had and the body just needs time to get a strong lh surge. Hope you find out soon.

Hi Ames, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, and now to have all this extra worry on top must be very stressful. I was in a very similar situation to your self, I had a termination due to my baby having Edwards syndrome, and afterwards my periods never returned, I just got bad pelvic pain and cramps when I should have had my period. After an HSG I was diagnosed with Ashermans syndrome. It took 2 operations but I was successfully treated and went on to become pregnant twice afterward so please don't lose hope. It's really important that you are diagnosed properly, an normal ultrasound won't normally be sufficient, you really need either an HsG or a hysteroscopy. Also it's really important you're treated my someone who knows what they are doing and follows a correct protocol, which usually means cutting the scar tissue away with micro scissors (not lasering or a further d & c as this can make things worse) followed by a coil for approx 1 month and a months worth or hormone treatment to encourage healing and regrowth of the lining of the womb.

There is a great website www.ashermans.org and a yahoo support group through this website or PM if you have any questions or I can help at all.

Wishing you the best of luck and fingers crossed for a BFP again soon

X

Hi Helen thank you so much for your reply and you too blue amber.
I have waited for so long with nhs to get any sort of appointment and my go laughed at me when I suggested ashermans!! I have booked an appointment with a private consultant for Friday morning because I am just going out of my mind. It is so hopeful to hear you have also had ashermans and have had a successful outcome and babies! I am so terrified that mine is gong to be irreversible. This doctor seems to have extensive experience with hysteroscopy and laparoscopy and works only in this area so I am not sure what to expect Friday. As you said an ultrasound isn't going to detect it. At the moment I don't k ow where I'm going to get money from but also don't care and will find it somewhere, as nhs wait times are ridiculous. Did you find this Helen?
Would you mind me asking how long it took before you had diagnosis and treatment from when you had d&c? Xx

Hi Ames, I by passed the NHS, and immediately went privately, from the research I did it was very clear that the most important thing is to be treated by an expert, there are two A listers in the UK (rated by the Ashermans Organisation) Mr Trew and Mr Lower. If you are going to go privately and can get to London to be treated, I would seriously think about going to see one of them. I have read so many horror stories of ladies going to see doctors who then make matters worse. If you join the AS yahoo support group there is a full list of trusted AS doctors you can access and also a list of questions you should ask if seeing a consultant not on that list, to ensure you get treated by someone who knows how to treat AS properly.

I was diagnosed four months after the termination, and had my first operation a few weeks after diagnosis.

I'm so sorry for your loss Ames.

My situation was not quite the same as yours, but I had the same fear of Ashermans.

I had an ERPC following a MC (my second within a period of a 4 months), and it took over 10 weeks for me to have a period. When my periods finally did return, they were not as they had been before - I had a few hours of light brown/reddish discharge, nothing else. I had previously had very normal, regular periods.

Because of this, and the fact that I was getting some horrible pain with my 'period', I was very worried about the possibility of Ashermans.

I was eventually referred to a gynae who happened to specialise in miscarriage, and he arranged blood tests which were to be followed by a laparoscopy. I ended up pregnant before any invasive testing though - something that I really had convinced myself couldn't happen as my periods were so very light that they were almost non-existant.

So, I know the situations aren't exactly the same, but I just wanted to let you know that there is someone else out there whose periods changed entirely following a D&C, accompanied by very bad pain, and that ultimately it made no difference to my fertility even though I was convinced it had. I don't know what caused those changes, as the testing never got that far, but DS2 was born safely 2 weeks ago.

I think I went from ERPC to referral in 5 months, I saw the consultant a few weeks later and testing started straight away.

Wishing you luck and strength x

Helen thank you again for the great advice, I have joined the yahoo group for uk but I have been awaiting response for approval. I am worried I will still be waiting to join and won't get a chance to read the questions before Friday? If by any chance you could get access to the, and let me know what they are I would be so grateful as I would be completely armed and ready? This doctor has said he does have experience with ashermans buti don't knw to what extent and I'm worried now he may make it worse. Xx

Brown eyes blue, wow your story would be like me having a winning lottery ticket right now! My gp has asked me to go to a get blood tests tomorrow to rule out pregnancy as she says urine tests aren't always accurate, but I kinda know there isn't really anyway I can be right? After d&c I didn't do the deed until I was covered by the pill so I suppose I could be pregnant form this month but I highly doubt it? But this is what happened to yourself, I don't want to get my hopes up everything's ok, I'm gonna think the worst I think. It's 3 months today since my d&c and like yourself I am getting funny pelvic pains on and off, which worries me. Endless congratulations on the baby, I'm very pleased for you, and ultimately this is all I want. It's so frustrating and nhs don't make it any easier! Now I'm skirt and stressed going private! Xx
