How long after ovulation should your period occur? Just I know when I ovulated, but not how long my cycle is :-S So is it 14 days after ovulation? Thanks!

10-16 days after ovulation is normal.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 07/07/2013 11:27

Ovulation is not an exact science and this can occur earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle.

It is all too easy to get the ovulation date wrong and signs can be misleading.

RaRaZ · 07/07/2013 12:05

I got my date from Clear Blue and other signs such as ovulation pain, changes in cm and cervical position, and other things I get when my hormones change, so I'm pretty sure I'm right!

So, I'm pretty sure my egg was released on 27th June. So does that mean my period should be due some time between today and next Saturday?? Ttc you see so agitated!!! Confused Cycle has always been a bit messed up (I'm 24, and when I say 'always', I mean since I first started), but has been a lot more regular since last summer - don't know how regular though as I never bothered to track anything, but I did start having periods roughly once a month, which is good! Haven't had one since January now though due to top and mc, so I'm not sure where my cycle is atm, but like I say, I DO know when I ovulated.

My luteal phase has varied between 13 and 18 days. I also have very irregular cycles and have been diagnosed with PCOS.

If your period hasn't turned up by 15th July then I would test.

Good luck.

qazxc · 07/07/2013 12:40

it varies from woman to woman, people say 14 days as it is the average (like saying a woman cycle is 28 days) but it could be more or less. If you haven't had a period 3 weeks after ov POAS (if you can wait that long).

RaRaZ · 07/07/2013 13:42

Sorry, but what is the 'luteal phase'? I gather it happens after ovulation, but what is it? What happens then?

The luteal phase is the second half of your cycle, between ovulation and your period arriving.

It gets it's name from the Corpus Luteum (yellow body) which forms in the ovary after ovulation takes place. The CL secretes Progesterone to allow a potential fertilised egg time to establish itself. If there is no fertilised egg the CL dies off and the corresponding drop in Progesterone is what causes your period to start.

Thanks guys, Frankelly especially - you know a lot! I don't (definitely don't) have PCOS so would you expect my luteal phase to be shorter or more regular?

I don't consider myself to know a lot, but I have read up on the subject. You might want to consider a book like this one to help you understand more about what is happening through your cycle.

It sounds like you need to start keeping a record of your cycles so that you can work out what is normal for you. You can do this yourself or use an app/website to do it for you.

You're not like an ignorant teenager! We don't get nearly enough teaching on all this stuff as teenagers IMO. I hadn't even heard of CM till I was 34 so you're doing well. I think Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler is the ultimate book on all this.
