Hi

Been 100 days since last period
Bmi 49
Gp referred to gynaecologist

Ttc but have high anxiety about a gynae - what am I likely to have to do test wise and will they even consider helping me at my weight? (23st)

Currently dieting whilst ttc and am early 30s

I am very bad with things 'down there' and never had a smear etc due to this (1 partner only)
no flaming pls

So if I decide to go - what tests will I have?I'm guessing smear and trans vaginal scan as standard?

Terrifying

Thanks for any help/advice

hi i have had periods up too 120days apart, my gp sent me to a gynae aswel, they never gave me a smear but the did to blood tests, scans of the womb and overies and i also had an xray with dye to see if my tubes where blocked. non of these were uncomfortable for me. it turned out i have pcos which had got worse due to hormones of previous pregnancy.
they may ask you to lose weight - it depends on your specialist, mine likes to have bmi's 35 and below.
try not to worry about your appointment and definatly go otherwise you will never get the answers you want
Good luck

PCOS sounds pretty likely based on the gap between periods and the weight. You could expect investigations to include blood tests, swabs and a TV ultrasound. These are fine, honestly. They might want to make sure your smear is up to date before treatment.

A low GI diet and weightloss can sometimes get women with PCOS ovulating by themselves. If not there are drugs they can use, but many PCTs do have a BMI cut off of around 30 for treatment. There's loads of useful info over the on the PCOS Verity website. Good luck.

Hiya,

Sorry you're going through this, it's really frustrating when you're ttc, isn't it? I just ended a 107 day cycle. I was also referred to a gynae. I ov'ed on the day of the appointment with the gynae and had a period two weeks later! I think it was relief that I was being seen, as it had been stressful trying to get the referral.
As far as tests went, I had a load of blood tests to check hormones and also had a transvaginal scan. I understand that you are anxious about any procedures 'down there'. it's not the most pleasant thing in the world. Could you talk to the consultant when you see them? Maybe they can sedate you? If they can do it in the dentists, they should be able to do it for gynae stuff too!!
I think they will want you to lose weight, but skinny people have irregular cycles too, so it needs to be looked into as a separate issue.
Good luck!

Sounds like pcos- I used to have about 2 periods a year! After various tests and scans I was given clomid to make me ovulate, which resulted in DD1 Smile.

I was still pretty irregular after that, but conceived DD2 naturally, and now that I have 2 DC and no plans for any more, I have a regular 30 day cycle. I'd happily go back to twice a year now! Good luck.

gollygosh123 · 19/04/2013 22:51

do they give clomid to bmi 40s tho?

Hmm, I don't know actually, sorry Sad. I do know someone with a BMI over 30 who was given clomid though.
