Hello, I am looking for any advice and or information and also to encourage others to look into inositol. I have previously had a pregnancy effected by spina bifida. I am now looking to try again and have been doing research which has introduced me to Inositol, UCL are presently conducting a study called the ponti study (have a look on line very interesting reading) and others in america have carried out similar studies which show that folic acid can reduce some neural tube defects by 70% but ask the question what about the other 30%. they have found some defects are not helped by folic acid and some women do not respond to folic acid but they have found amazing results with inositol. one study suggests in the not too distant future it will be prescribed along side folic acid as part of the preconception up to 12 week plan. What I am struggling with when reading all this research is the following and this is where i would greatly appreciate any help and advice. The research discussed D-Chiro-Inositol and then just Inositol - does anyone know the difference and which one should be taken?
Also where can you buy it from (that you can be sure you are getting what you want!)?
And finally what is the recommended dosage, I think it is 1000mg (1g) which is the amount suggested but would like to know for sure.
Many thanks and hope you all having a good day

Hello there,

I was just wondering if you managed to find out the info you were looking for on Inositol and if you had any success with it? I have had 2 pregnancies affected by anencephaly so I am planning on taking Inositol if we try again. It would be really good from anyone who has tried it.

Thanks

Hi there, I've also had two pregnancies with anencephaly. I was given information about a trial at The Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital about the PONTI study. I got in touch with them to be a part of the study. I was given 5mg Folic acid tablets as well as inositol/placebo tablets to take. I'm not sure whether what I was taking was actually inositol or just a placebo but I now have a gorgeous little boy and I strongly believe the inositol had a lot to do with it! Good luck with your next pregnancy x

Hi! Does anyone know the safe dosages for D-Chiro Inositol and Myo-Inositol in order to prevent neural tube defects? Any experiences with these supplements?

Hi,

Quite some time ago I spoke to the people running the PONTI study regarding dosage should i want to take Inositol myself. I believe that in the study they gave people 1g of inositol (along with the high dose of folic acid). Holland and Barrett sell inositol and it's 650mg in a tablet. The PONTI people said that it would be adequate to take 1 of those a day (at my own risk of course and understanding that this is still in trial). I think the Holland and Barrett one is myo-inositol. Obviously, don't just take my word for it - check with your General Practitioner before you take any additional pregnancy supplement.

Good luck.
