Hi, i'm 35 have been married nearly 8 years and think i do want kids afterall and ready to have them now. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years back, its not too bad - i'm not over weight and periods are pretty regular - but went to see my GP just in case and to check re the rubella/measles vaccines. My GP said they would only give vaccines once i'm pregnant including the rubella/measles one....which didnt ring true as my SIL who lives in Australia said she was given a booster vaccines and was told she shouldnt try to conceive for the next 3 months.

Can someone advice please?

Also, am i supposed to give up caffiene, alcohol, cheese and shellfish etc now? or only once i'm pg? I eat fresh and healthy mostly, wonder how far i should go, especially considering it could take me months and years to conceive given PCOS.

Hi Smile
I started TTC in November but went to the doctors in August to ask them if there was anything I should be doing apart from taking folic acid. I asked specifically about rubella, chicken pox and slapped cheek as I'm a teacher- the classroom is not the best environment for staying healthy! They gave me blood tests the following week which confirmed that I'm immune and so won't be in danger if/when I conceive. Not sure if that was because of my job though.
RE. giving things up, I have done but only because I worry about everything.
I hope that's helpful! x

thanks pinkmoonlight. i've been worried and reading about the vaccines this am. The FPA website says it is best to check all immunisations, and especially as you said if you come into contact with kids. I dont on a regular basis but do travel on tube and trains and work with people who have kids so come into contact with a lot of people but then not sure how these things spread. I am worried, will call nurse tomorrow.

Faith in GP is gone, as she said they'll check immunisations once i'm pregnant to give me jabs! as i've read through, you're not supposed to ttc in 3 months of getting the rubella jab!

Hi Hyper - just wanted to stick my nose in and say that my GP tested me for rubella immunity before I started TTC for that very reason i.e. if you need to have the vaccine, it delays the start of TTC. So definitely get tested for immunity or ask for the vaccine itself!
