Twiglett · 23/03/2006 11:52

what does 26% knows what it is doing mean?

there are different parameters they test sperm on: numbers, motility and how many are normal

what did consultant say?

would change in lifestyle help DH .. does he cycle? does he take zinc supplements, does he wear boxers?

don't despair lia

liandme · 23/03/2006 11:54

got to go back in a couple of weeks to have more tests done and dh is having a test called a swim up to count how many actually swim up a tube (or something like that)

Poss a bit TMI but did you get advised to have timetabled sex as well? We were told to only have sex on days 10 - 16 every other day and to ideally abstain outside of these periods (totally for him IYSWIM Wink)to try and improve the motility. He was also told to cut down on alcohol.

liandme,

Your story should serve as a warning to others - their man should be tested at the same time that their initial investigations are carried out. Am very sorry its taken you so long to discover this.

PCOS if this is diagnosed will need to be treated - were any treatment options mentioned to you with regards to this?. (Possible options here include drugs, injectibles or ovarian diathermy surgery. Although it can be treated it cannot be cured as the cystic follicles associated with this condition do return).

Thw swim up test is a useful one to have done. One poor sperm result is not in itself totally indicative that there is a male factor problem. Hopefully the swim up will give more information (he may need to have more than one such test done). Zinc and simple methods like that will do no harm at all so are worth doing but it may not ultimately affect either count or motility of sperm.

Do not rigourously time intercourse - continue to make love when you both feel like it. You're under enough stress as it is and timing intercourse will only add to it.

www.verity-pcos.org.uk is a good website to read with regards to PCOS if you are diagnosed with this. The more information you arm yourself with the better off you will be.

you could try giving dh and yourself pumpkin and sunflower seeds these have been known to work for PCOS metformin is an option although not licenced gP's will prescribe it to get cycle on course

gothicmama · 23/03/2006 13:01

sorry it was not licensed for use with PCOS when I took it (prg a year later)but it is used for diabetes

MeerkatsUnite · 23/03/2006 13:21

liandme,

You should ideally have a diagnosis of the problem before putting you on something like clomid. If they suspect PCOS can they not do an internal ultrasound scan to see what your ovaries are like?. What did the blood tests reveal?. Clomid itself will encourage your ovaries to work harder but if PCOS was diagnosed it is not always suitable for all PCOS patients to take.

You may want to look into getting a second opinion.

Metformin is usually prescribed by gynae consultants. It can help some PCOS patients if they are insulin resistant (again not all PCOS patients though are IR).

liandme · 23/03/2006 13:41

i think the results she called with today showed i didnt have pcos but not sure have to go back in two weeks to discuss treatments and stuff but she did mention clomid to get cycle back to normal
