Anyone had a good experience with TTC after mirena coil?

I've read lots on here over the last few days about the mirena coil and TTC afterwards, aswell as unpredictable cycles and weight gain. My experience with the mirena has been very positive. I had one period a few weeks after having it fitted (my periods prior to becoming pregnant were very heavy and lasted 8-9 days) and nothing since. I get the occasional twinge in my uterus which the nurse at my surgery said is probably ovulation.

Removal was also straightforward, bit uncomfortable with a bit of discharge for a couple of days.

I have also lost 6 stone over the two years it has been fitted. This wasn't a side effect of the mirena, more a result of hard work and a healthy diet, but contrary to lots of posts on here regarding the negative side effects of the mirena re weight gain.

I guess I'm hoping to hear stories from people who have had no problems with the mirena who have then conceived quickly after removal. I am dreading the thought of my periods going back to how they were pre-mirena and having to suffer several before conceiving again . I became desperate to get pregnant last time after coming off the pill simply because I just couldn't face another period!

It's only been a few days since removal and I had my regular ovulation pain a few days before that. Think today may have brought with it a period. Already got the familiar bloating, dull ache, etc. Hope I don't have to suffer many more before a positive test result. That's another question...when should I start ovulation testing? If this is a period then I can work it out. If not.....?

Hi McBobby

I had the Mirena coil for the best part of 10 years and like you it really helped my awful heavy periods. I didnt have one whilst having the coil and it was a godsend! I am now TTC #1 and got pregnant straight after having the coil out. We werent really trying and I didnt really believe it would happen TBH! I wasnt really aware of OV but did get OV pains with coil. Unfortunately I had a MC at 6.5 weeks and having to start all over again. I am also trying to avoid having an AF and we started TTC straight away!

I have tried to do OV testing this cycle but gave up as it seems to be all over the place after the MC. Maybe leave it this one and if you get pg great and if not you will have some dates to work off for the next one?

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your MC.

The doctor told me to wait until I'd had a period until TTC. I asked the nurse if this was for health reasons or just so it's easier to date but I can't help but worry if I get pregnant too soon that my body wouldn't quite be ready yet. Tough one to answer, especially after your experience, just me wondering. The nurse said not to worry too much as my body obviously works!

As does yours so good luck with your quest! My advice would be to not try too hard. My first time I used the ovulation test and had three horrendous periods. In the end we decided to relax, do it as much as possible and then I did a handstand just as a bit of a laugh because I'd read so much gubbins. It worked! Hope this time will be quicker!

Hi, I had a mirena coil for 4.5 years. Had it taken out and waited for a period before ttc, then fell pg on 3rd cycle after that first period. Am now 14 wks and all is good.

Like you, I loved having the mirena, it sorted out my heavy periods and horrendous amount of bleeding plus once it was removed my periods were regular as clockwork for the first time in my life!

Good luck with ttc.

McBobby · 29/08/2012 22:19

Congratulations! Thank you for your post. Good to hear some positives about the mirena. I hope I don't have to wait too long...

Actually, can I ask what you were both like after removal? I had a pain on Monday last week which the nurse said was probably ovulation. I then had the mirena removed on Thursday. I've been bleeding lightly since then. Is this normal?? Could it be a period or is that too soon? I've had a bit of discomfort but nothing like my normal periods. Desperate to know what my cycle is and to actually know I'm ovulating!

Hmmm from what I remember I was a bit cramps afterwards but no bleeding but I think I had mine taken out before ovulation if that makes any difference? I was told I may or may not get a small withdrawal bleed so I guess that's what you may be getting?

Think I got my period about a week later than expected but every 28 days after that. Hope that helps.

AlmondAvocado · 30/08/2012 07:49

Hi

I had some slight cramps the couple of days after but no bleeding. I must have ovulated a couple of weeks later as got pg! I don't remember noticing I had ovulated though but probably wasn't looking out for it! I'm sure it won't take long for you! Wink

Peacocklady · 30/08/2012 08:26

I had mine out a few weeks ago after 5.5 years and had no periods. I bled for a few days after but it was an instrumental removal as the strings had gone in so not sure whether it was a period or not.

Had lots of pregnancy symptoms throughout the cycle.
Got a pos opk 22 days after removal which was a lucky dip because I wasn't doing them daily just messing about really! Had a lot of twinges and cramping after that. Got busy with dh but got af 15 days later so 37 day cycle from removal to af. The pg symptoms continued up to af so it was confusing! Since af they haven't returned so I'm not obsessing now really.

So I can't tell you about getting pg quickly, but other people seem to, just letting you know my experience of first cycle.

McBobby · 30/08/2012 19:54

Thanks everyone. All knowledge helps. Don't know what af is though. Sorry, I haven't used mumsnet much since my small person arrived - time!

Af= period, opk= ovulation predictor kit x

workshy · 30/08/2012 21:12

I had the mirena for 2 years

I had it removed on the 28th december, DD2 was born on 10th October -you do the maths Grin

Cakebot · 31/08/2012 16:04

This is really off topic, but I thought you didn't ovulate on the mirena? I still have very light bleeding every month, but didn't think it was ovulation. Surely that means you can still get pregnant?

AlmondAvocado · 01/09/2012 13:07

Cake I think you can still ovulate but the egg doesnt implant due to the coil? Not an expert but what I have always presumed. I have a friend who got pregnant but her coil had slipped so there was room for the eggy to get in there!

McBobby · 02/09/2012 15:48

Copied this....

The levonorgestrel released from Mirena prevents pregnancy by increasing the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb. This makes it more difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb. By preventing sperm entering the womb, successful fertilisation of an egg is less likely.

Levonorgestrel also prevents the womb lining (endometrium) from thickening each month in preparation to receive a fertilised egg. This stops any eggs that are fertilised from successfully implanting onto the wall of the womb, and prevents pregnancy in another way. Levonorgestrel may also prevent the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation), but this does not necessarily occur in all women who use the IUS.

I currently feel lethargic and heavy and eugh that awful familiar teenage feeling from my youth. Need to get pregnant ASAP so I don't have to feel like this. :-(

Hello everyone,

Really interested to read your experiences because I've just had a mirena coil removed after 2.5 years so can ttc. I found it fantastic- didn't bleed at all whilst I had it which was great, but am now waiting for af so I can start working out my cycle. It's been just over a month so far and only had a little bit of bleeding a couple of weeks after it was removed so not sure whether that was af- don't think it can have been as it was only a couple of hours!
Am ttc my first - really hoping it doesn't take too long.
Good luck to everyone else x

Hi everyone.... Its quite calming to finally read some good things about the Mirena coil. I had my coil fitted just over a week ago (9 days and I have had some bleeding which I think was my regular cycle which I was due and now I am spotting and the occasional dischage mucus stuff. Can any of you guys remember how long or if you did bleed after having it fitted. I hope I am as lucky as you guys on the coil with no bleeding. I suffer really painful heavy clotty cycles but also I am using it for contraception if I ever stop bleeding as I have 3 children already. I am eventually going to look into sterilization.
x

LexiLoganberry · 13/09/2012 14:59

drew I wouldn't say I bleed it was more spotting and only for about a day and a half to two days, my periods then stopped all together until having it removed.

I really liked my coil and after we have our #2 if we're lucky enough to get pregnant I'll be having another, it will be my 3rd.
