TTC and weight loss - should I bother?

Morning folks - first time poster!

My husband and I are about to start TTC - had my implant removed two months ago, taking folic acid, have almost entirely cut out the wine (hard to do!) - but am a bit concerned about my weight.

I'm not massively overweight, but have put on just under a stone and a half in the six months since I got married. This is due partially to honeymoon excesses, generally easing up on exercise and not watching what I am eating as much, but mainly attributable to two flare-ups of a chronic medical condition that needs to be treated with steroids. I have lost a little bit by upping my running over the past few weeks, but ideally would like to lose the rest whilst TTC.

I was talking to my friend about it and she said she didn't understand why if I was TTC, and that it might be better not to focus on it so much (she has a 3 year old, not that this qualifies her comments!). My concern is that if I don't lose it I may end up much heavier if I am lucky enough to get pregnant - from a vain point of view and from a health perspective! - especially given that fact that I put on weight easily.

Any thoughts? Is it damaging to be losing weight and doing a fair bit of exercise whilst TTC? Or would you let the weight loss take a back seat?
Any thoughts or musings welcome! Smile

If you want to, then do so, but be sensible. Slimming World is the only diet which is approved for pregnancy and so should be ok for TTCing.

If you're sensible about it, and don't let it affect your cycle, then I can't see a problem.

I suppose it depends on your BMI - above 30 seems to have the biggest impact on fertility, pregnancy & birth.

I was like this - a year later I'm still childless and fat! Start the diet - it will give you something else to focus on.

Same goes for looking for a new job. Or you'll be fat, childless and hate your job.

Oh woe is me!

Thanks for the responses folks. Lotsofcheese - my BMI is fine, just at the top of the healthy weight range for my height, but I am only 5ft 1" so I feel like a heifer!

I know that trying to lose more weight is the sensible thing to do - the thought of having to lose 2/3/4 stone after having a baby....ugh!

It's also complicated by the fact that I have been on the pill then implant for nigh on twenty years so have no idea what my fertility is like - have had no such thing as a cycle for years. So good idea to have something else to focus on!

Of course after tonight's BBQ... Grin
