Conception

When's the best time to get pregnant? Use our interactive ovulation calculator to work out when you're most fertile and most likely to conceive.

I'm still confused and wondering what could this be?

Orignal thread

I started this thread ^^ and did a test last weekend with a negative result, i however have still not had a period.

One of the lovely mnetters pointed me in this direction, as she knew you were all so knowledgeable and clever and stuff so really any one know what could this be?

Do you know if you definitely ovulated? If you haven't ovulated then your period cannot arrive - its a domino effect of hormones with one triggering the next in line.

It is not uncommon to have annovulatory cycles and someone women (like me!) have stupidly long cycles.

From personal experience GPs won't investigate unless you have been without a period for 6 months.

I have no idea if i have ovulated i wouldn't even know where to start with that (i am not actively trying to conceive) but i assume i would have as i assume i have all the previous months. Confused

No, you can have a period without ovulating, the two things are separate.

Sorry I can't help as to what's happening though. :-(

Nicola you can't have a proper period without ovulating, though you can have breakthrough bleeding.

When you ovulate the corpus luteum left behind after ovulation secretes progesterone, this maintains the lining of the uterus. As the corpus luteum dies off one of two things will happen, if you are pregnant the fertilised egg will secrete sufficient hormones to maintain the lining, if you are not pregnant the hormone levels fall and the lining is shed.

If you don't ovulate, you won't produce progesterone and the lining will not thicken.

This explains in more detail

OK, so i am ovualting them if i am having periods then?

It is entirely possible that, for one reason or another, you have not ovulated this cycle and therefore will not get your period. As it has only been a month since you had a bleed, however light, I really don't think you should worry.

I would consider testing again in a few weeks time if your period has not arrived.

Ick, this has happened right at the wrong time!! But isn't that always the way!!
