Stopped taking the pill over five months ago and still no period - would you go and see GP?

I wonder whether any of you lovely ladies can give me some advice...

I stopped taking the pill in February and have not yet had my period. I was on the pill for 13 years and am worried now I've completely screwed my cycles up Sad

Before any of you say it - I am certain I'm not pregnant! DH and I have been using condoms since I came off the pill as we wanted to let my cycles get back to normal so we'd know the best times to TTC.

I've been debating going to see my GP and trying to do some Internet research to find out whether they'd even do anything at this point, but it's a bit confusing and I can't get a feeling for whether this is normal or something to be worried about.

I'm 28 and in good health, normal weight so I don't think that's affecting it. Had regular periods before I went on the pill as well.

What would you do - would you go to GP or would it be wasting their time - and if I do go what do I ask them to do, should it be blood tests or something??!!!

Would be very grateful for any advice x

hey

I too have been of the pill since october, and still no period. I wen to the GP at 6 months and he basically said that nothing would be investigated until a year. I am now 9 months with out a period and saw the GP for something different last week, and that GP has asked me to have bloods done and then perhaps a referral to gynae.

I hope this helps, good luck,

x

Go and see them, 5mths is a long time xx good luck!

Yes I'd go, even if they say they won't do anything yet, at least it registers early on that there's concerns. What were your cycles like before you went on the pill?

FlissyFloo · 26/07/2012 21:36

Thanks for the replies. Lalexander - it sounds like its different depending on which GP you talk to, which is the impression I got from my googling as well! Did the second GP take some blood from you then and there?

I'm fairly certain they were very regular - it was a long time ago now but I remember being able to predict exactly when I would get my period!

It took me eight months for my cycles to start again after coming off the pill. I went to the GP after four months (or so), they said come back after six months. I went back after six months (ie two months later) and they said come back after a year if nothing happens at which point I'd be referred to gynae. At eight months my cycles returned and have stayed pretty regular ever since.

At the time I was 28, and a similar weight to what I am now (overweight but nothing too scary). We've been TTC unsuccessfully for two and a half years now but there has never been any mention of taking a while to get back to normal being in any way related, so don't worry :)

Thanks for your reply evilgiraffe, and for stopping me from panicking with the last part of your post! It just sounds like different GPs have really different ideas about how long we should have to wait! Hope you are lucky with your TTC soon x

I am going back for bloods next thursday. Yeah I think it depends on which GP you see.

I would go and see the GP if nothing else it lets them know your timescales etc.

I have also had a 3 sessions of acupuncture to try and stimulate my periods, so far nothing but i am ever hopeful

Good luck with your acupuncture and your blood test results lalexander, will keep my fingers crossed for you that the results find something that's very easy to sort out!
