How detrimental is PCOS to getting pregnant

When DH and I went to fertility check up, some time a few months ago, I came away with a surprise.

Firstly, we knew that DH sperm were not swimming strongly, and only about 4 million, this is down to his snip reversal some 2 years ago.
This wasn't big news to us, as he had been tested prior to this any way.

What did shock me down to my bones, was when we were told that I has "a chocolate cyst" on one of my ovaries.

I was told this cyst is about 40mm long (1 and half inches).
This really scared me. He described it as the size of an average hens egg.
Any way, it was only on one ovary, the other is showing as clear.

I would like to know, just how much this "chocolate cyst" is hindering me getting pregnant.

The specialist said he would not like to do any thing with it, until after I got pregnant, guessing in case they damaged the ovary it is attached to.

Fay.

Did the doctor actually describe this as PCOS? It sounds quite different to me - PCOS generally involves a number of cysts all over the ovaries, along with a host of other symptoms, such as carrying extra weight, or hirsutism, irregular or absent periods (I think you need 3 of the symptoms to be diagnosed with PCOS).

In answer to your real question, which is how much does an ovarian cyst affect attempts to conceive, I'm afraid I don't know. PCOS-ers do tend to take considerably longer to conceive. But I don't know about single cysts.

Hiya- I was diagnosed with endometriosis and having a 10cm chocolate cyst when we were trying for a baby.my specialist said I could get pregnant but it was unlikely .he wanted to start a hormone injection programme to starry shrinking everything but I asked if it could wait a while as we were trying for a baby.we had already been trying for a year already but he gave us 3 months to try and then start the injections.after month 2 I cancelled his appt as I was pregnant Grin .i did eventually have the cyst removed but it grew back to the same size within 5 weeks. 3 years later I got pregnant again and now have 2 wonderful boys who are the light of my life.so don't give up and lose hope Smile.

Fay,

Chocolate cysts are linked to endometriosis, not PCOS (which is multiple cystic follicles on the ovaries).

Hi sorry all,
I got confused.
He said "chocolate cyst", I just thought that was PCOS.
Duh !

We are really now thinking to just give it a few more months, then start some assisted conception.
I don't know if to go for IUI, or the IVF, or ICSI.
We would like to try the cheaper option firstly, then the more expensive IVF or ICSI.

Fay.
