Endometriosis - anyone had a baby post treatment?

I have just found out that a friend of mine has endometriosis and have been trying to read up a bit about it on the internet. What I'd like to know, is if anyone out there has fallen pregnant after being treated for endometriosis or if they know of anyone who has successfully had a baby after treatment. I don't know what stage hers is but have read that there are 4 stages, 4 being the worst. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Bugzi - I know a woman that, against all medical advice, went on to have 4 children!! She had endometriosis for years. I met her when her 1st was about 4 so I don't know if she had it before then. But she wanted a girl so badly she got pregnant with child no.2. She had to have bedrest for a large part of that pregnancy..... then had a boy. Shortly followed by another boy..... then extremely quickly (within a year) finally gave birth to a girl! She was only 29, but they had to give her a hysterectomy after the 4th.

But there you go..... she managed to get pregnant fairly easily. And although she had tough pregnancies, she's fine now and all the babies were healthy.

I got pregnant with Harvey (13 wks0 4 months after laparoscpy for endo

Bouj · 10/12/2003 16:42

I had lots of endo treatments, 3 operations and hormone treatments and was told to fall pregnant at 24, or accept the fact I wouldn't fall naturally...I ignored this, as I was in no position to be having a baby then, and hoped for the best. I came off all the drugs last April to try to concieve, and was pregnant by June!! DS is 8 months old and I have (so far)had very little pain. I think the earlier you try to get pregnant, the better, as there is less scarring from the endo and surgery. There is some great sites on the web, and also the Endometriosis Society. IMO, a good doctor is a must. Wish your friend luck.

Thank you all for your replies, they are all very encouraging. I'll pass them on to her so that she doesn't give up hope. Any more stories would still be appreciated - the more the merrier, to keep her spirits up.

Bugzi ... my best friend had a laparoscopy (sp??) and laser treatment about 4 years ago ... her endo was quite bad ...
Her DD is nearly 2 now (uncomplicated pregnancy apart from normal discomforts) and she is 37 weeks pregnant with her second child ....
Hope these stories give your friend hope ...

I had endometriosis diagnosed after trying for a baby for 3 years. After another year our consultant suggested we had artificial insemination. We did - our ds1 is now nearly 3. They do say that during pregnancy endo can clear up. I think that was the case for me as I got pregnant with ds2 after only 2 months of trying!

kiwicath · 13/12/2003 12:23

Yep! Tried for 2 years to get preggers and was told many reasons why, all of which were stabs in the dark. Had a hyserosalpingography to determine that both tubes were blocked with the scar tissue. After a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, was on hormones for 3 months then got told to "go for it". Had a 6 month window in which I could realistically get pregnant. Was devastated after the first month of trying but hit the jackpot on the second. Having a superb pregnancy, no sickness, tiredness, pain, cravings or any of the nasties you hear about. Baby boy due any day now. Wish to god he would hurry up though! I too was desperate to hear success stories when I was going through it. There are plenty out there so wish you friend the best of luck from me.

Snugs · 13/12/2003 16:11

Me too!

After 2 miscarriages, laparoscopy and drug treatment I was told IVF was my only option. We decided against it and I resigned myself to being childless. After 6 further years of taking the pill (it controlled the pain to an extent) I decided to stop - and fell pregnant within the month! I now have DS1, 6yrs and DS2, 2.5 yrs.

Best of luck to your friend Bugzi.

Jimjams · 13/12/2003 16:57

Bugzi- 2 of my friends had this. It was zapped and they were both pregnant within 2 months

hmb · 13/12/2003 17:13

Post MC I had a rare condition similar to endometriosis, Asherman's syndrome. My uterus was stuck together and the cervix was so blocked I wouldn't bleed, even though I was having regular periods. I had to have a D @ C to break down the scar tissue, and IUD fitted to keep everything 'open', and took the pill to help to reline the uterus which was patchy and scarred. All of this took most of a year to sort out. I fell pregnant with dd after 3 months of trying and ds withing a year of trying (33 and 37 years old each time). Both pgs were fine, and I ended up having secions for conditions unrelated to the Asherman's. I hope this helps.

Bugzi - another success story with me - had laparoscopy and laser treatment plus hormones last summer, baby born this summer. I really empathise with your friend as my diagnosis really scared me, first time I'd had to even think about my fertility and whether I'd have children. And from what I read, they really don't have a clue why fertility is affected in some cases, bad endo doesn't necessarily mean bad fertility and vice versa - some theories even suggest the pains mean people don't have sex as much and that's why they don't conceive. Hope she finds a good doc and fingers crossed!

wilbur · 15/12/2003 10:46

Bugzi - another success story - a friend of mine had v bad endometriosis which started in her teens (nearly 20 yrs ago). She had varous ops, was on drugs etc for years and was told she would never have children. After she married they didn't try in any way as they thought it was not possible and were busy collecting puppies, when there was a surprise pregnancy against all odds. Preg was fine, on the whole, and gorgeous dd at the end of it. They then decided to try for a second and had further treatment which was difficult and took a while, but eventually dd2 arrived, 5 years after dd1. They are very happy and feel blessed. Good luck to your friend.

Hi Bugzi
I had been TTC for 2 years - went to the docs and after lots of investigations found that I had grade 4 endo. I had surgery to remove ovarian cysts (+ lots of other nasties) and continued trying for another 3 years. Then I began medication reduce the cysts that had returned so that I could have another op in prep for IVF when I found out I was pregnant. Am trying TTC again ATM but endo is causing more probs. There is light at the end of the tunnel - I feel very privileged to have DD. Also lots of v. good advice and support around.
I think just the whole psychological 'infertility' thing is as much a barrier as the endo. Good luck to your friend.

Well, the good news is ................ she's 12 weeks pregnant today!!! While I was discussing this with all of you, she was falling pregnant! She is absolutely thrilled (obviously) but also very nervous. Poor thing had a terrible scare over the weekend too. On Friday she went for a check up and the midwife couldn't find a heartbeat so booked her for a scan on Tuesday! Poor thing had to spend all that time thinking she'd possibly lost the baby. Then went for the scan expecting the worst and was told all was absolutely fine! Wonderful ending but how can they make you wait that long? It's so cruel. I would have gone nuts! But seriously, thank you to all of you for your success stories and here's another one to add on to the list for anyone else out there in the same predicament.

I can add another - dd's godmother is pregnant after treatment for endometriosis. It can be done! Congratulations to your friend Bugzi.

MammyShirl · 19/02/2004 15:45

Hello

I bring goodnews

My sil suffers from endometriosis which started in her 20's. From what I know you need to be on the pill or pregnant to escape the nasty thing! Her problem was she was trying to conceive but the endometriosis kept getting in the way. She went through IVF last summer and fell pregnant with twin boys which are still tucked up cosy in her very big belly now. She is 34 weeks pregnant and I cant wait to meet them - i think will be quite soon!
Good luck to your friend x

MammyShirl · 19/02/2004 15:48

doh! sorry i read your original email and not your update!!!

CONGRATULATIONS to youR friend!!!!!!

pollingfold · 19/05/2004 17:07

I know that this is an old thread - but I just want to add to the hope that it gives.

I sent it to a friend just after they had a laparoscopy, which found endometriosis, in february this year.

Well she has just told me that she is 12 weeks pregnant, with TWINS!!!!

I am overjoyed for her and hope that it will give someonelse a little hope.

climbingrose · 19/05/2004 17:18

I had serious endo too, for ten years. I now have a ds, it is possible !

Schmozer · 24/05/2004 12:07

I can add another success story now. My endo was diagnosed in 1998 after a laparoscopy. Hormone treatment turned me into a zombie so I stopped taking it and in 1999 had a laparotomy to remove large cysts from both ovaries. My consultant said that he'd left some ovary on each side and my tubes were clear, so in theory I could conceive but we wouldn't know until we tried. We should have tried straight away of course, but we'd only just got married, had no money and weren't even sure about whether we wanted children. After a lot of faffing, moving to Wales, changing jobs, illness etc we started trying two months ago and I got my BFP yesterday. Both my best friend and my dsil have had children after endo. It can happen!

malinki · 29/05/2004 15:41

Hi, I also have a success story I suffer with PCOS and Endometriosis was discovered during a Lap & Dye which my cysts on my ovaries were going to be lazered. They couldn't continue due to the Endometriosis being very visable, so I was given a nasal spray called Synarel, a year later another Lap & Dye was performed and I had my DD 11 months after that, had no sign of Endometriosis returning as yet, but ttc #2.

suzanneme · 06/06/2004 03:31

Me too! I've had laser ablation of moderate endo and then GnRH analogues, and conceived DD after 8 months of trying (this was 6 years after my last endo treatment). Am currently pg with a DS, who was conceived the first month of trying! Have read recently that the link between endo and infertility is a bit debatable as it's so common that it might be a coincidental finding that gets the blame, IYKWIM.

kittyb · 07/06/2004 01:36

I had a laparoscopy and laser treatment and fell pregnant the very next month with ds, after 18m ttc. Unfortunately been ttc number two for about 22m. I would like another lap/laser but consultant thinks it was just a coincidence that I conceived immediately afterwards. Started ttc again when ds was 1 and wish I had kept breastfeeding up to then to keep periods and endo at bay for a bit longer.

smileawhile · 01/09/2004 23:32

I have had severe stage 4 Endo in all manner of interesting places since I was 13...now about to become a fossil of 40. I have had every new treatment as it came out and I had a "window of opportunity" after last treatment. It worked and I am now Mum to a super 5 year old. If I can do it, anyone with Endo can. Good luck to anyone out there ttc.
