Vasectomy reversal advice

Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but am after some help and advice.

My DP had a vasectomy just over 3 1/2 yrs ago, he has 2 children from his first marriage and didnt think he wanted any more. However we have decided that we would like to have a child together.

Can anyone give me any advice on where we go from here, I have found a few clinics on the internet and am aware that it is not going to be cheap but to be honest the whole thing is slightly overwhelming right now, A friend of mine suggested IVF instead of a reversal but I am not sure if this is a viable alternative.

Any advice would be welcome

It is worth looking in to a reversal operation as it has not been that long since his op.
In an ideal world it would be good to find a surgeon who would also take some sperm from his testicles at the same time as the reversal so you could have some frozen if the reversal fails - in practice I'm not sure how many offer this as they need to be linked to a fertility clinic.
The problem is that if the reversal fails you'd then have to pay for another op to retrieve sperm, then for a cycle of IVF, so if you can get the sperm at the same time as the attempted reversal it would be cheaper in the end.
The other alternative is using donor sperm, but you wouldn't be eligible for NHS treatment as your other half has had a vasectomy.
Good luck

Thank you for replying, I had wondered if it was worth looking into having sperm frozen in case it failed but only one of the clinics i have looked at offer this service.

My FIL had the reversal op a while ago, they had had three boys and didn't want anymore then a few years later they decided they wanted some more. So he had the reversal and went on to have two more boys.

I would do what the above poster has suggested. Good luck.

We were in a very similar situation to yourselves, dh had a vasectomy after dd, 3 years later we had it reversed. It turns out that dh had a large granuloma on one side which was very close to the main artery so they weren't able to repair that side. The other side was fine. Unfortunately the 6 month sample showed a count of only 3million per ml, the norm is around 40million. Also, motility was poor with only around 20% forward progression, the rest were going in circles or playin Xbox.
With my eggs approaching their sell by date at 37, we opted for ivf with rather than a repeat of the reversal. I had my first cycle in April and I'm now very pleased to be 7 weeks pregnant.
I too was wondering about going straight for ivf, but realistically the op cost 4k, and a single cycle of ivf/icsi was 4.5k with the drugs, so it made sense to go for the op first and progress to ivf as a last resort, as although I already had proven fertility and comparability with dh, I still only had around a 25-30% chance of the ivf working each cycle.
The reversal op is not as straightforward as the original vasectomy, there is a lot more pain/ bruising, dh wasn't allowed to lift anything or exert himself for 2 weeks and no sex for 3 weeks to allow full healing.
The ivf on the other hand was no biggie for me, side effects of the drugs were annoying rather than unpleasant, and the egg collection/embryo transfer were no problem.

Btw we used dr Andrew Dawson at Hartlepool, they are absolutely lovely, and I'm pretty sure they offer the freezing service. Realistically though, around 90% of men have some sperm present after a reversal, but only around 60% have enough to get the job done.

Thank you it is Dr Dawson I have been looking at, I think I will make an appointment for us to go and talk through our options and take it from there.

Congratulations rogersmellyonthetelly
