What I mean is, I went to my GP for a smear this week and told her we were trying to conceive... she said to avoid raw meat and fish, alcohol and smoking (well, I don't smoke, but I do like sushi!) Do you think it helps to be "super-healthy" even before you're pg? And, a separate, but no less important point, all this sex isn't going to be as much fun without getting pissed first!!

Well i think it is wise to follow that advise.

BUT ... considering the day before i found out i was pg with dd i had been on an all day, all night bingedrinking hen day/night then i would be a hypocrite to say you should .

Obviously we weren't planning the pg, so i had no reason to think i was pg. We drank champagne from 11am until some ungodly hour. Had perfect pg and now a perfect dd!

Now we are ttc i would like to point out that i wouldn't drink quite so heavily if i thought there was an inkling i could be pg , but don't think i would be too rigorous with the rules either.

That's funny about the hen!!
I remember I was away on a "hen week" in Spain just after ds would have been conceived and I got pretty tanked just one night (tequila )
But I wonder if being healthier helps the reproductive process as well as eventually helping to have a healthy baby?

oic got the wrong end of the stick there didn't i?

Well they do tell men to stop smoking and drinking who have fertility probs don't they.

yes, drinking/smoking can decrease your chances of conception signifficantly, up to 40%. as for not eating raw fish/meat etc, that has to do with the potential for picking up certain bacteria, chances of which are slim if you buy your meat/fish from a reputable outlet, and tbh, if I'd given up everything you shouldn't eat during pregnancy when ttc, then I wouldn't have eaten anything for virtually two years as took me over a year to conceive DS, and now 10 months ttc again.

The two are different though, as drink/alcohol can affect your fertility, the rest don't affect it as such, although it is important to be eating healthily in order for your body to be a healthy environment for implantation etc. if you don't eat that healthily though you can take prenatal vitamins.

me!
Have really gone on the wagon with alcohol, take all my vitamins, iron supplements and really healthy eating.
I have also found that I have a lot more energy which make sex far more desireable!

Thanks for more replies! Hi wannabe! Haven't had time to go on the chat thread much but am thinking of you all. Piffle I'm impressed with your healthy regime! I had gone a few weeks without alcohol but gave in tonight to just one glass of wine with dinner.
Here's to healthy conception...

I'm def. like it already. Been ttc since December. Started to exercise a little and have been more aware of what I eat. I also don't smoke/drink so a big plus, but it's so hard to stick to that regime when I know I'm not pg yet. Last time I was really good and disciplined with regards to food, I didn't put much weight on (but still managed to look huge as I'm 2st. heavier than I should be). I believe it's good to start as soon as you ttc. You certainly feel better
