Positive test today - first Dr's appointment

Had positive test today! Hooray :-) My last pregnancy was my first and we didn't really know what we were doing...turns out I still don't (or can't remember what!). When we went to the Dr last time he made us feel a bit stupid and just said somethign like 'well if you've had a positive tst chances are you are pregnant'. I don't know what I was expecting! Anyway, presumably next step now is to see dr again so he can book our scan?

Sorry to ask such a stupid question!

in our area we deal directly with the midwives rather than going through the gp so check what the norm is in your area

I did similar when I was pg, although my gp was far nicer about it :)

Could try ringing gp's receptionist, tell them you are pg and ask if you should see dr, or if they can give you the number for the mw in your area. That's what I intend to do if I ever get pg again.

Congratulations. Ensure you are taking a folic acid preparation best is one with vitamin d in it. Avoid pâté less well cooked meat in pasteurised cheese and prawns that are not hot eg prawn sandwiches. More food advice if you google. All with midwife here

Oops unpasturised cheese

Congratulations!

At my first GP appt he told me to take folic acid and vitamin D, what foods to avoid, eat healthily don't smoke don't drink etc. (All stuff you can find out on the web really...)

He also asked me where I wanted to give birth and therefore where I wanted them to refer me for antenatal care - I was given a choice of 2 hospitals. So it might be a good idea to have thought about this before the appointment?

The GP will not book the scan themselves but will refer you to the maternity unit at the hospital. The maternity unit will then send you a "booking in appointment" (where you get weighed, tested for rhesus negative, etc and asked about what kind of birth you want) and then the appointment for your 12 week scan.

It is usually possible to bypass the GP and go straight to the maternity unit if you prefer. However I found it quite reassuring to see the GP first, just to make sure I had got all the information possible!

Thank you for replied. I have been taknig folic acid and vits since we started trying to concieve and can remember most of the do's and don'ts from first time round. I htink I'll do as suggested and ring the Drs surgery for advice, i.e whether appt is necessary. I was just naive first time round and was expecting some kind of confirmation before first scan!! I convinced myself we were going to get there & they'd find nothing!!!
