Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right place as MN has changed alot since I was a regular user! If not I'm very sorry but hopefully someone would be able to advise or help me :)

I had my Mirena coil removed in October last year, Not for TTC purpose just that I wanted a break away from the hormones that turned me into a fat, spotty, dragon! I also wanted to learn about my cycle to have a go at NFP.

I was fitted with a diaphragm in November and got my 1st AF on 15th December. My second followed on 16th January and my 3rd 20th February, So all in all a pretty regular(ish) pattern.

Now where it all messed up!

On Saturday 17th of March, I ovulated, I know I ovulated because I had the one sided cramping I had before all other AF's. Also on Saturday 17th March I had a contraception failure :(

As it was a Sunday my doctors surgery was closed and on the Monday after ringing for over an hour I finally got through to be told "Sorry, all appointments are booked". So I rang the pharmacy who told me that the Morning after pill was a Whopping £25 but if I came in on Tuesday, the manager would be able to give it me at no cost.

So I went in on the Tuesday and was given the pill but told that even though you are given 72 hours to take it in, on the 3rd day it is only 58% affective... Great!!

Since then I have had no AF pains, no symptoms, no nothing :(

I have however felt very sick over the past week, Took 3 tests, 1 Friday, 1 Saturday and 1 on Sunday all BFN.

So now I'm stuck, where do I go from here? Is it possible that AF just got lost in the post? But I ovulated so where did the egg go? Is it possible that I'm pregnant? How many people get pregnant after a failed morning after pill? Which was Levonelle 1500 BTW.

Feeling very lost/confused/scared and not sure what to do next :(

Any advise would be greatly appreciated :)

Poor you very stressful. I really hope that you did not let the receptionists know why you wanted an appointment if you did a letter to the practice manager is in order this is an emergency so you should have been seen but if they did not know why then ok. Am Shock about the pharmacist as they could have directed you to family planning where you would not pay. Any way all in the past but hope it helps someone else.

It could be the hormones have caused your cycle to be up the creek plus the worrying. I would suggest leaving a few more days and re test make sure it is first pee of the day. If still neg I think a trip to GP is indicated. Unfortunately you maybe pregnant.

Wishing you the best

Yes emergency contraception can fail but I think guidance says you should have a period within 3 weeks of taking it. So you've got until the end of this week. I think test again in a couple of days. If you go to see your GP I suspect that's all they will say to you at the moment anyway.

Hello,

I can understand why you're feeling so worried. If you only ovulated on the 17 it might be too early for the pregnancy hormone to show up in your wee and so you'd get a negative result.

However, wasn't AF due around then? If so it would be weird to be ovulating then.

Either way, I think all you can do is wait and if no AF in the next week test again and then go to your GP for a blood test.

I hope it all works out ok. It seems so unfair that when we're trying to have a baby it takes ages and then when we don't want one a pregnancy comes along after just one little slip up!

One final thing. It could be that stressing about potentially being pregnant and even taking the morning after pill could have scared AF off for a while. Fingers crossed she turns up soon!!

iliketosleep · 03/04/2012 20:38

Thankyou all for your kind words :)

Buglylugs - I did tell her what it was for and she told me to ring the pharmacy :O If it turns out I am PG then I think a letter will be sent!

Pinkteddy - It says on the leaflet to see your GP if no AF after 5 days or something along those lines but I suspect your right, and don't fancy sitting in a crowded waiting room for an hour to be told "Just wait and see" lol

Coveredinflour - My CD between Jan and Feb was 36 days so I was working it around that figure as I don't have a regular cycle yet, SO I was looking at around 27th of March give or take a few days till next AF, plus with Feb only having 29 days it knocked a couple off. If this is right of course lol I'm new to all of this! I did have however have the unmissable one sided cramping for most of the day which I have upto 10 days or so before AF arrives. This is why I get so confused!!

Thankyou once again :)

I hope all turns out ok am Shock at receptionist will check same does not happen in our practice. Very wrong sorry you have been at the end of it

When I took the morning after pill I was told that the hormones could make my AF come earlier or later.

But it is true that it is less effective the later it's taken. No one told me that and I became pregnant. I went to Boots before work on Monday morning (Day 3 after the incident) and they didn't have any but said they would have it at 5pm. So I waited and went back instead of going to another branch. Now it is never 100% guaranteed (something else I hadn't realised) so perhaps I would have got pregnant anyway but waiting an additional 9 hours might have been the difference between it working and not working.

Fingers crossed it shows up soon but if you know when you ovulated and that's 17 days ago a good test should pick it up now. So the -ve tests is a good sign. Hope AF arrives soon so you can relax.

Still no AF, still no symptoms, still feeling sick, still petrified :(

A little scared to do a test this far on....

Will order some off ebay tomorrow that will buy my stupid body a few days to get it's backside in gear! lol

The MAP has always (total of 3 taken) completely buggered up my cycle. I have alway been late afterwards, and then hit or miss for a couple of months as well. And have never been pregnant :) I've taken it a couple of days after the event too. I really wouldn't worry too much (easier said than done!), as you have given your system a massive dose of hormones that will take a while to clear and settle down.
I buy preg tests from poundland when I need them.

iliketosleep · 05/04/2012 23:45

Really Pinktransit? That's put my mind at rest a little then!! I suppose it makes sense that the Mirena coil stopped my periods and I'm guessing they are along the same lines? Phew!! Thanks Grin

Good news!

kalidasa · 07/04/2012 18:59

Just saw this thread. Glad it's worked out OK for you. But worth knowing for the future that the only way the MAP is proven to work is by preventing ovulation. That's why the quicker you take it the more effective it is, since it leaves less time for you to ovulate before taking it. It may also work to hinder conception or implantation too but that's not as clear. So the riskiest situation is probably one in which you have unprotected sex immediately after or exactly at the time of ovulation. In that scenario, even the MAP taken fairly promptly may not be effective.

Have you started charting for NFP yet? Once you get the hang of it you'll know most of the time exactly where you are and also how long your luteal phase is which helps to tell whether your period is really "late" (and you're likely to be pregnant) or whether you just ovulated later than you thought.

As it's three weeks since the 17th March, it is actually quite unlikely that you ovulated that day. What women recognise as ovulation pain may be associated with a ripening follicle rather than ovulation itself, so its possible that you hadn't yet ovulated when you took the MAP, and your cycle was then delayed by the hormones.
