Confuzzled by Doctors - can someone help?!

Ok, so after a none AF appearence last month and BFNs, I went to the doctors. She was very good seeing as we've only been actively TTC for 4 months, and not preventing for a bit before that and sent me for bloods.
AF arrived on day 38 last month in the end, had been about 26 days each time before that, so very odd, and I assumed it was just a 'blip'. However I'm on day 37 today of the next cycle and no AF or sign of, and again BFN.

So I rang today for the blood results and this was the conversation:

Receptionist: "ahh I see you had a lot of bloods taken, lets see; normal, normal, normal, normal ... ahh ... You need to come and see the doctor".
Me: "Oh, can you tell me why?"
Her: "You're booked for an ultrasound yes?"
Me: "Erm, no, no-one's mentioned that - can you tell me why?"
Her: "No I'm just a receptionist, I don't understand the terminology, you'd better come and see the doctor"
Me: "But you've worried me now, can you tell me what wasn't normal at least?"
Her: "No, shall I make you an appointment?"
Me: "Well yes, you'd better have, haven't you?!"

So now, naturally, I am bricking it. The appointment is next frigging Wednesday.

Can anyone advise what the bloods might have thrown up that would need an ultrasound - or is this just the next natural step when bloods are normal? I'm not sure I can cope waiting til next Wednesday, any advice or opinions on what the chuff is going on? Am I broken? Pleeease?

Thats just cruel, call back and ask to speak to a nurse. You'll go loopy if you wait until Wednesday!

This is a true case in point as to why receptionists should not be permitted to give this type of information to patients. They are not qualified to provide answers to the quite understandable questions. In no other profession do I know (I'm a solicitor and DH is a dentist) are non-qualified staff allowed to do this. It is a total outrage and causes so much upset and alarm.

Stickle - I'm so sorry about this. You must speak to somebody medically qualified. Can I suggest that you pitch up at the surgery tomorrow morning and insist. Sit there until someone sees you. I would also complain to the doctor/nurse that you do end up seeing.

My mum was given a terrible fright last month when she called up to get the results of her xray and was told by the receptionist that it was apparently clear but was marked with "paths". The receptionist told mum that this was bad but she didn't know why or what that meant. But she knew from giving another patient their results. Confused. It was only when I spoke to DH that night that we found out that it just means that it has been looked at by the pathology department. This was confirmed by the GP that my mum saw the next day after basically sitting in the waiting room and refusing to leave.

Can you use the fact that you've been given some worrying half-information to leverage an earlier appointment - maybe go to surgery in the morning and just wait for one to come available? Although she's probably just coc*ed up and misunderstood something that may be nothing to worry about, you will go mad if you have to wait till next Wednesday! Good luck Smile

Totally inappropriate conduct and an unacceptable time to wait. As others have suggested I would pay a visit tomorrow insisting on seeing someone medically qualified who can read and relay the findings. Receptionists should not be dealing with this kind of information with the general public.

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 29/03/2012 18:24

I agree it's unacceptable. You should complain - half info from receptionists are a particular bug bear of mine.
There's a possibility they wonder if you pcos - irregular cycles can be an indicator of this along with other bloods they may have taken. That's the first thing that sprung to mind. You should demand to speak to a doctor though. Being fobbed off like you have is unacceptable!

Sticklebricksuk · 29/03/2012 18:59

Thanks all for the input. I'm on leave as it happens tomorrow so I may just doorstep them as you suggest and sit it out until they talk to me. It's just the not knowing that's worrying me, my imagination has got to be far worse than anything the doc would actually say I'm sure assuming she doesn't just say Stickle you are totally broken and entering an early menopause and you will never have any children ever ever ever and your dh will go and find someone young and fertile Blush

Good luck stickle - take a thermos and some sandwiches. show them you mean business! Grin

Some surgeries offer GP call backs, where they take your number and give you a (wide) slot for when the assigned GP on that day will be doing call backs.
It's good for things like this and when you can't simply sit and stare at them.
Shocking, ill-mannered, quick to judge, jumped up receptionists. Grrrrr......

What was the outcome OP?
