Could the morning-after pill have failed?

I had unprotected, first-time sex, 3 times in one night 5 and a half weeks ago and took the morning-after pill the next afternoon well within the time limit. Two days after taking it I started bleeding heavily, two weeks early for when my period should have been, but this may have been from loosing my virginity or possibly implantation bleed. Now nearly 6 weeks on I have many pregnancy signs. My breasts are swollen and tender, as is my lower abdomen which is swollen and hard. I'm sick and nauseous throughout the day. Tired. My sense of smell has indefinitely heightened (I usually have difficulty smelling the strongest smell, now Its almost super human!!!) My taste also seems different, coffee tastes metallic and certain foods I can taste the individual ingredients of. I'm having strange pains that don't feel like cramps and a tightness across my stomach. During the internal examination the doctor noticed my uterus was tense. I took pregnancy tests which came out negative. My period was over a week late but started two days ago after an internal exam at the clinic and now appears to be stopping. My period is usually brick red and heavy and lasts all week, this one is light for me and has clots in it, and now is stopping after only 2 days. However all the signs and symptoms remain so it cannot have been PMS. Even after negative tests and bleeding I still feel pregnant and am unconvinced it has worked. I was in the height of ovulation when I had sex and because it was my first time I'm very sure the symptoms are caused by that and nothing else as I've never experienced them before. I am generally calm, and not stressed, it wouldnt be an unwelcome pregnancy either. Any thoughts would be appreciated :-)

Yes it's possible that the MAP failed. A long-term MNer, who no longer posts, has her DS because of MAP failure.

But you have negative pregnancy tests - have you done another since your period? if it's still negative, have you been tested for infections? You need to go back to your GP if you do another test and it is still negative and get tested for infection.

I got pregnant when I was younger through failure of emergency contraception - I'd taken it 6 hours after I had unprotected sex.

Go back to your GP - explain about the short period and the signs and symptoms.

Sex 6 weeks ago and a recent negative pregnancy test would suggest you're likely not pregnant, but if things are still not "right" it may be worth going back in case there is an infection of some sort?

6 weeks after unprotected sex should produce a positive result on a test by now.

Without meaning to sound patronising, you really shouldn't be relying on the MAP as contraception. It's for use when contraception fails not as the only form of protection. It's utterly crazy to be having unprotected sex when you don't want to get pregnant. The morning after pill failed for me. The condom broke, and the MAP didn't work. So please don't rely on it. If nothing else, at £25 a go, it's a he'll of a lot more expensive than condoms/the pill.
